Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system. It distributes electricity to every room, appliance, and outlet. But many homes in Southern Maine still have panels that are decades old and no longer equipped to handle modern electrical demands. Here are the key signs that your panel needs an upgrade.

1. Flickering or dimming lights. If your lights flicker or dim when you turn on appliances like a microwave, hair dryer, or vacuum, your panel may be struggling to deliver enough power. This is a sign that your circuits are overloaded and your panel cannot keep up with demand.

2. Breakers trip frequently. Circuit breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded — it is a safety feature. But if you find yourself resetting breakers on a regular basis, it means your panel does not have enough capacity for your household's electrical usage.

3. A burning smell or scorch marks. This is a serious warning sign. If you notice a burning smell near your panel, see discoloration or scorch marks, or hear buzzing or crackling sounds, stop using the affected circuits immediately and call a licensed electrician. These signs can indicate overheating or arcing, which are fire hazards.

4. You still have a fuse box. If your home still uses a fuse box instead of a modern breaker panel, it is time for an upgrade. Fuse boxes were designed for much lower electrical loads and do not provide the same level of safety as modern circuit breakers. Many insurance companies also charge higher premiums for homes with fuse boxes.

5. Your panel is over 25 years old. Electrical panels have a lifespan of about 25 to 40 years, but older panels may lack the capacity and safety features required by current electrical codes. If your panel is aging, a proactive upgrade protects your home and ensures you have enough power for modern needs like EV chargers, heat pumps, and home offices.

At Aces Highlands, we provide thorough panel inspections and honest recommendations. Whether you need a simple repair or a full panel upgrade, we will walk you through your options and make sure your home's electrical system is safe, reliable, and ready for the future.
