Getting to Know Gray

Gray holds one of Maine's most unusual Civil War stories: in 1862, the body of an unknown Confederate soldier was mistakenly shipped to Gray instead of a fallen local Union lieutenant. The women of the town buried the stranger in Gray Village Cemetery and paid for his headstone — marked simply "The Stranger" — and the grave is still tended today. Gray is also home to the Maine Wildlife Park, the state's refuge for animals that cannot return to the wild.

Gray's roughly 4,600 homes are younger than much of Cumberland County. Census estimates put the median year built at 1983, and only about one in eight predates 1940. Heating oil still dominates in Gray. Census estimates show about six in ten occupied homes heat mainly with fuel oil or kerosene, roughly 18 percent with propane, 12 percent with electricity and nearly 8 percent with wood, while utility gas barely registers at under 1 percent. Water in Gray is a patchwork. The Gray Water District runs mains through the village and along roads such as Shaker Road and Lewiston Road, but the town has no public or district sewer, even where a water line passes the door, so every home relies on a septic system. Outside the district, households drink from private wells, and bedrock wells here deserve testing: in a USGS review of 2005-09 lab results, about 27 percent of Gray wells sampled exceeded the federal arsenic standard, among the higher rates in Cumberland County. East Gray also carries the history of the McKin Superfund site, where solvents from a 1960s-70s waste facility reached private wells and nearby residents were offered public water. The practical upshot is treatment equipment matched to the well, pressure tanks kept in working order, and tank water heaters chosen with the water chemistry in mind.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Gray

Gray is Central Maine Power territory, and much of the town is wooded house lots on long rural roads, the setting where one fallen limb can darken a whole street. The 1998 ice storm took 23 days to fully restore statewide, the October 2017 windstorm set CMP's outage record with Cumberland County among the hardest hit, and on December 18, 2023, a wind and rain storm left more than 70,000 Cumberland County customers in the dark and led Gray to close its town office early. For a home on a private well, losing power also means losing water and, with an oil burner, losing heat, which makes a standby generator on a transfer switch more than a convenience. Census commute data show nearly half of Gray workers travel 30 minutes or more each way, a daily distance that an overnight Level 2 charger covers easily.
