Electrical Emergencies: What Warrants an Immediate Call
Electrical problems are the one category where waiting to see if it happens again is the wrong instinct. Here's what genuinely can't wait, and what's safe to do in the meantime.
Stop-and-Call Signs
- A burning or ozone smell near any outlet, switch, or the panel, even faint.
- A breaker that trips immediately every time it's reset, or won't reset at all.
- Visible sparks from an outlet, switch, or appliance cord.
- A panel, outlet, or switch that's warm or hot to the touch.
- Buzzing sounds from an outlet, switch, or the panel.
What to Do Before We Arrive
If you can safely reach the main breaker and identify the affected circuit, shutting off just that circuit (or the main, if you're not sure which one) removes the immediate hazard while keeping the rest of the house running where possible. Never touch a panel, outlet, or switch that's warm, sparking, or smoking — that's a call, not a DIY moment.
If there's any visible fire or smoke, call 911 first, then us — a fire department response and an electrical repair are not the same call, and the first one takes priority.
Power Outage vs. Electrical Emergency
A neighborhood-wide outage from a storm is a utility issue, not something we can fix — check whether your neighbors also have power before assuming it's your house. If your neighbors have power and you don't, that's worth a call, since it points at something specific to your service rather than the grid.

Should I call the utility or an electrician?
If the whole house and your neighbors are dark, call Central Maine Power first. If only part of your home has lost power, or the problem is on your side of the meter, that is a licensed electrician's job — call us.
