Our Approach to Electrical Services

How Your Electrical Panel Works

  1. Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
  2. Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
  3. Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
  4. Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
  5. Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits

Aces Highlands provides full residential electrical services for homes throughout Greater Portland and Southern Maine. From panel upgrades and EV charger installs to outlets, lighting, generators, and whole-home rewires -- we handle it all with clean workmanship, strict code compliance, and a State of Maine electrician's license behind every job.

An outdated electrical panel can be a safety hazard and may not support the demands of modern appliances, EV chargers, or heat pump systems. Our panel upgrade service brings your home from 100-amp to a modern 200-amp service, installs new breakers, and ensures your electrical system is safe and up to code.

We handle everything a home needs: new outlets in a finished basement, Level 2 EV charger installation, whole-house standby generators, dedicated appliance circuits, and complete rewires of older homes. Our electricians route wiring cleanly, label circuits properly, pull the permits, and test everything before we leave.

We also install indoor and outdoor lighting, ceiling fans, dimmer switches, GFCI outlets, and smart home wiring. Every installation meets current NEC codes and is done with the same attention to detail we bring to all our HVAC and plumbing work. Check our coupons page for current specials on electrical services.

Why Aces Highlands?

We treat electrical work with the seriousness it deserves — whether it is a single home outlet or a full panel upgrade. Every connection is tight, every circuit is tested, and every job is permitted, inspected, and done under a licensed Maine electrician. Safe, clean, and done right.

Rebates & Guidance

Aces Highlands is a Registered Residential Vendor with Efficiency Maine
  • Rebate

$400 off a Wi-Fi connected home EV charger

Efficiency Maine's Off-Peak Charger Incentive knocks $200 off a qualifying Level 2 charger at purchase and pays another $200 once it's online and enrolled in off-peak charging — up to two chargers per Maine address. The discount is on the charger hardware itself; we handle the dedicated circuit and permit separately.

  • Recommendation

No Efficiency Maine program covers panels, wiring, or generators

Panel upgrades, rewiring, and standby generators aren't Efficiency Maine categories on their own — but a panel upgrade is frequently what makes a rebated heat pump or heat pump water heater possible in an older home, so it's worth planning together rather than as a separate project.

Homeowner Guide

Understanding Your Home's Electrical System

Electrical work is the one trade where most homeowners have the least visibility into what's actually happening behind the wall — you can watch a plumber sweat a joint or an HVAC tech gauge a system, but wiring is either hidden or it's a hazard. Here's a plain-language map of how it fits together, and where the seven services we offer sit in that picture.

From the Street to Your Breakers

Power reaches your house through a service drop (overhead) or lateral (underground), passes through the utility meter, and lands at your main breaker — the single shutoff for everything in the house. From there, branch breakers split that capacity into individual circuits, each protecting a run of wire sized for what it feeds: a 15-amp circuit for a bedroom's outlets and lights, a 20-amp circuit for a kitchen countertop, a dedicated 40 to 60-amp circuit for a Level 2 EV charger or an electric range.

The panel's total rating — 100 amps, 150, or 200 — is the ceiling on how much you can add before an upgrade becomes necessary. A lot of our panel-upgrade calls start with a homeowner who didn't know that ceiling existed until an EV charger or heat pump quote hit it.

The Seven Jobs Most Homes Eventually Need

  • Panel upgrades — more capacity, and replacing older panels with a documented safety history (Federal Pacific, Zinsco).
  • Wiring and rewiring — dealing with knob-and-tube or aluminum branch circuits, or running new circuits for a remodel.
  • Outlet and switch installation — new circuits, GFCI/AFCI code compliance, tamper-resistant devices.
  • Lighting installation — recessed, outdoor, and smart lighting, done to the right fixture rating for the location.
  • EV charger installation — a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized under NEC Article 625.
  • Generator installation — standby power with a code-compliant automatic transfer switch.
  • Electrical repair — flickering lights, warm outlets, nuisance tripping, and everything that falls under "something's not right."

Why Licensing and Permits Aren't Just Paperwork

Every one of those seven jobs, done correctly, is performed under a State of Maine electrician's license, pulled as a permit, and signed off by an inspector through the Office of Professional Licensing's Electricians' Examining Board. That inspection is a second set of eyes checking the work against code before it's buried behind drywall — the same reason a home inspector flags unpermitted electrical work when a house goes up for sale.

It also matters for insurance. A claim involving an electrical fire is scrutinized for whether the work that preceded it was permitted and done by a licensed electrician; unpermitted work can complicate or void coverage on the loss.

How Electrical Ties Into Heating, Cooling, and Hot Water

A growing share of our electrical calls start as an HVAC or plumbing conversation: a heat pump install that needs more panel capacity, a heat pump water heater that needs its own circuit, a generator sized to keep a boiler's circulator running through an outage. Because Aces Highlands holds electrical, plumbing, and heating licenses under one roof, that panel work, gas or condensate line, and equipment install happen under one permit with one crew — not three separate contractors trying to schedule around each other.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

Electrical Services FAQs

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Portland?

Yes for panel changes, new circuits, EV chargers, and generator hookups. We pull the permit under our Maine electrician's license and schedule the inspection, so the work is documented when you sell the house.

How much does a panel upgrade cost?

A 100-to-200-amp panel upgrade in Greater Portland typically runs $2,500–$4,500 including permit and inspection. Service-entrance cable, meter socket, or grounding upgrades required by the utility can add to that.

Can my panel handle an EV charger or a heat pump?

A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 40–60-amp circuit and a heat pump 15–30 amps per outdoor unit. Many 100-amp Portland homes can fit one but not both. We do a load calculation before recommending an upgrade rather than assuming you need one.

What size standby generator does my house need?

Most Southern Maine homes are well served by a 14–22 kW standby unit that carries the furnace or boiler, well pump, refrigerator, and key circuits through a multi-day outage. Whole-house coverage runs larger. We size from your actual loads, not the square footage.

Why do my breakers keep tripping?

Either the circuit is overloaded, something plugged into it is failing, or the breaker itself is worn. Repeated trips on the same circuit, a warm breaker, or a burning smell mean stop resetting it and call — our emergency electrician is available after hours.
