Our Approach to Outlet & Switch Installation

Aces Highlands installs and replaces electrical outlets and switches throughout your home -- from adding GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms to installing smart switches and USB charging outlets.

Modern homes need more outlets than ever. We install additional outlets where you need them, upgrade existing outlets to GFCI or AFCI protection where code requires, and add USB charging outlets for convenience. If your home needs additional circuits to support new outlets, we also provide wiring and circuit installation services.

We install dimmer switches, three-way switches, timer switches, and smart switches compatible with popular home automation systems. Every installation is done cleanly with proper wire connections and secure mounting.

If your outlets are old, loose, or showing signs of damage like scorch marks or a burning smell, replacement is a safety priority. We diagnose the issue, replace the outlet or switch, and check the circuit to make sure everything is safe. Pair new switches with updated lighting fixtures for a complete room upgrade.

Where Does Code Require GFCI and AFCI Protection?

GFCI outlets protect against shock by cutting power the instant current leaks to ground — modern code requires them anywhere water and electricity can meet: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, basements, and outdoor receptacles. AFCI protection guards against arc faults, the hidden sparking inside damaged wiring or loose connections that starts fires, and current code calls for it on most living-area circuits. Older homes were built long before these requirements existed, and grandfathered wiring is legal to live with — but every year without protection is risk you do not have to carry.

We add GFCI and AFCI protection at the outlet or at the breaker, whichever fits your wiring and budget best. It is one of the cheapest meaningful safety upgrades in the trade, performed by a Maine-licensed electrician, and we will tell you plainly which locations in your home actually need it — no scare-tactic whole-house pitch.

Which Outlet Warning Signs Should You Take Seriously?

An outlet that is warm to the touch, buzzes, sparks visibly when you plug in, shows scorch marks, or no longer grips a plug firmly is telling you something is wrong behind the wall plate. Loose connections build heat, and heat is how electrical fires start — the fix is usually a fast, inexpensive replacement, but it should not wait. The same goes for switches that crackle or feel hot.

Two-prong outlets throughout a home mean ungrounded circuits. Depending on the wiring behind them, the right fix ranges from GFCI replacements (a code-approved solution for ungrounded outlets) to running new grounded circuits via our wiring services. We check what is actually in the box before recommending anything.

Outlet & Switch Installation FAQs

Why is my outlet warm or buzzing?

Warmth, buzzing, or sparking usually means a loose or deteriorated connection inside the outlet — a fire risk that gets worse with use. Stop using the outlet and have it replaced promptly. It is typically a quick, inexpensive repair.

Can two-prong outlets be upgraded to three-prong?

Yes. If a ground path exists in the box, a straightforward swap works. If the circuit is ungrounded, code allows GFCI outlets labeled "No Equipment Ground" as a safe replacement, or we can run a properly grounded circuit. We check the wiring first and give you both prices where both apply.

Where do I need GFCI outlets in my house?

Modern code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, unfinished basements, and outdoors — essentially anywhere near water or ground contact. Older homes are grandfathered, but adding GFCIs in those locations is a low-cost safety upgrade we strongly recommend.

How much does it cost to add or replace an outlet?

Replacing an existing outlet or switch is typically a modest service call; adding a brand-new outlet where none exists costs more because it involves running cable, nationally often $150-$350 per location depending on access. We quote before we work, and the quote is the price.

Can you install smart switches and dimmers I bought myself?

Yes. We install customer-supplied smart switches, dimmers, and USB outlets all the time — and we will flag compatibility issues (like dimmers that need a neutral wire your box may not have) before anything goes in the wall.
