Getting to Know Kittery

Kittery was incorporated in 1647, making it the oldest incorporated town in Maine, and sits as the state's southernmost town, across the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, established in 1800 on Kittery's Seavey's Island, was the U.S. Navy's very first federal navy yard.

During the Revolutionary War, some of the first vessels ever built for the U.S. Navy, including the USS Ranger under John Paul Jones, were constructed right on Kittery's Badger's Island -- a history that still shapes the town's identity along the water.

Kittery Homes and What They Need

Kittery has the oldest housing stock of the York County coastal towns Aces serves, with a median build year of 1965 and about 25 percent of homes predating 1940 (46 percent predating 1960) -- fitting for a town that has been incorporated since 1647. On homes this old, a rewiring project often turns up several generations of electrical work layered on top of each other.

Heating and Cooling in Kittery

Fuel oil heats about 60 percent of Kittery households, the highest share of any York County town Aces studied, with bottled or tank propane at 18 percent and electricity at 13 percent; Unitil also supplies natural gas to parts of town. That heavy oil dependence makes Kittery a strong market for pairing existing systems with a heat pump.

Water Supply and Drains in Kittery

The Kittery Water District supplies public water from a set of local surface reservoirs and ponds -- Bell Marsh Reservoir, Folly Pond, Middle Pond and Boulter Pond -- while the town runs its own wastewater treatment plant on Dennett Road. On Kittery's oldest streets, that long municipal history is worth knowing before assuming a drain cleaning call is a simple fix.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Kittery

Central Maine Power serves Kittery, with no municipal electric utility in town. Given how much of Kittery's housing predates 1960, older panels and knob-and-tube wiring are a routine find, and panel upgrades are frequently the first step before adding a heat pump or EV charger.
