Getting to Know Wells

Wells was founded in 1643 and incorporated on July 5, 1653, making it the third town incorporated in Maine. The town is drained by the Webhannet River and is home to both the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve at Laudholm Farm and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge.

Of the town's 73.6 square miles, more than 16 are water, reflecting Wells' extensive beach and marsh frontage across four distinct beach neighborhoods: Wells Beach, Moody Beach, Drakes Island Beach, and East Shore Beach.

Wells Homes and What They Need

Wells has one of the newest housing stocks among the York County coastal towns Aces serves, with a median build year of 1989 and only about 8 percent of homes predating 1940. That postwar-and-later coastal development boom means most of the systems we work on here are second- or third-generation, not original construction. Heat pump repair on those newer systems is a common call.

Heating and Cooling in Wells

Fuel oil heats about 55 percent of Wells households, with bottled or tank propane at 22 percent and electricity at 12 percent; Unitil runs natural gas into parts of town as well, though delivered fuels still dominate. That mix leaves plenty of room for pairing an existing oil system with a heat pump.

Water Supply and Drains in Wells

Public water in Wells comes from the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport & Wells Water District, which serves about 25 miles of York County coastline, while sewer service is handled separately by the Wells Sanitary District at its own treatment facility. Because water and sewer run through two different utilities here, a sewer line repair sometimes means confirming which district's line is actually involved.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Wells

Central Maine Power serves Wells, with no municipal electric utility operating in town. On the beach-neighborhood homes especially, ongoing salt exposure makes panel upgrades and corrosion-resistant fittings a bigger part of the job than they would be further inland.

Local & Independent — Not a Franchise

Aces Highlands is a locally owned Portland, Maine company serving Wells — not a national franchise. Our technicians are not commissioned salespeople and nobody here is required to upsell you anything. We do the work you called us for, do it right, and earn the next call. That is the whole business model.
