Getting to Know Saco

Saco was settled in 1631 and cycled through a few names over the centuries, including Winter Harbor and Pepperrellborough, before settling on Saco in 1805 and becoming a city in 1867. It elected its first female mayor, Jodi MacPhail, in November 2023.

The city's York Manufacturing Company, once a major textile employer, closed for good in 1958, and Saco has grown well beyond its mill-town roots since -- it's now part of the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford metro area and home to Thornton Academy and Ferry Beach State Park.

Saco Homes and What They Need

Saco's housing stock is newer than many of its York County mill-town neighbors: the median home was built in 1982, and only about 22 percent of units predate 1940, with roughly 32 percent predating 1960. That newer mix is one reason we see more calls for routine system upkeep here than for full rewiring jobs.

Heating and Cooling in Saco

About 60 percent of Saco households heat mainly with fuel oil, with electricity at 14 percent and bottled or tank propane at 14 percent; Unitil also serves parts of the city with natural gas. Where gas is available, a gas boiler installation is often the simplest replacement path for an aging oil system.

Water Supply and Drains in Saco

Saco shares its public water system with Biddeford: the Maine Water Company's Biddeford-Saco Division draws its entire supply from the Saco River. The city's own Water Resource Recovery Department treats wastewater at a plant on Front Street, licensed for more than 4 million gallons a day. On riverfront and Camp Ellis properties, a sewer line inspection is a smart step given how much the shoreline here has shifted over the decades.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Saco

Central Maine Power serves Saco. The city's Camp Ellis section has a long, well-documented history of coastal erosion tied to jetty construction at the river mouth, and homes in that area see more than their share of wind and salt exposure on outdoor equipment and service panels.
