Our Approach to HVAC Services
How a Heat Pump Works
- Outdoor unit — fan and compressor extract heat from outside air
- Reversing valve — switches the system between heating and cooling
- Line set — carries hot, high-pressure refrigerant indoors
- Indoor coil — releases heat into the airstream
- Warm air — the blower delivers it to the room
Aces Highlands is a full-service heating and cooling company based at 508 Riverside Street in Portland. We repair, replace, and maintain heat pumps, furnaces, boilers, and air conditioning for homes across Greater Portland and Southern Maine — with a licensed crew that also handles the electrical and plumbing side of every HVAC job.
Heating comes first in Maine, and we service every kind of system a Southern Maine home might have. Our heat pump and mini-split team installs and repairs cold-climate systems rated well below zero. For forced-air homes we handle furnace repair and high-efficiency furnace replacement. For hydronic homes — baseboard, radiators, and radiant floors — we provide boiler repair, annual cleanings, and boiler installation for oil, propane, and natural gas.
Cooling is no longer optional in a Portland July. We install central and ductless air conditioning, and for most homes we recommend a heat pump that does both jobs — cooling in summer and cutting your heating bill in winter. Because we hold Maine electrical and plumbing licenses too, the panel upgrade, gas piping, and condensate work that come with new equipment happen under one permit with one crew.
No-heat and no-cool calls go to the front of the schedule, and the phone is answered after hours. We diagnose the real problem, quote the repair before we start, and tell you honestly when replacement makes more sense than another repair. Financing is available for new systems, and we handle the Efficiency Maine rebate paperwork for qualifying equipment.
Why Aces Highlands?
One local, independent company for the whole HVAC system — heating, cooling, and the electrical and plumbing tied to it. No commissioned salespeople, no franchise fee in the price, and no pressure to replace what can be fixed.

Rebates & Guidance
- Rebate
Whole-home heat pump rebates by income tier
If a heat pump is part of your heating or cooling plan, Efficiency Maine rebates $3,000–$9,000 for a ducted whole-home system, or $1,000–$3,000 per outdoor unit for mini-splits, scaled to income.

Maine's 2028 heat pump target
Efficiency Maine's Triennial Plan VI, approved April 23, 2025, targets 38,000 Maine homes on heat pumps by mid-2028, 6,500 of them low-income, with average savings over $600 a year.

Oil, gas and propane furnaces and boilers don't get a cash rebate
Efficiency Maine's guidance for fossil-fuel systems is about efficiency, not a rebate check: pick a high-AFUE condensing unit, size it from a real heat-loss calculation instead of by habit, and seal up the ductwork or piping around it — a smart thermostat alone has shown roughly an 8% cut in heating run time in Efficiency Maine's own data.

Keep the boiler or furnace as backup, if you want to
Plenty of Southern Maine homeowners add a heat pump for day-to-day heating and cooling and keep the existing boiler or furnace running for the coldest nights or a power outage. Efficiency Maine's rebate applies to the heat pump side regardless of whether you keep the old system in place.

Heating, Cooling & the Electrical Behind Both
"HVAC" covers heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, but in a real Maine home those three overlap with plumbing and electrical work more than the acronym suggests. Here's how the pieces actually connect.
Three Ways to Heat a Maine Home
Forced-air furnaces, hydronic boilers, and heat pumps solve the same problem — keeping a house warm through a Maine winter — with three genuinely different mechanisms. A furnace heats air directly and pushes it through ducts; a boiler heats water and circulates it through baseboard, radiators, or radiant floor tubing; a heat pump moves heat from outside air rather than generating it by burning fuel. Most homes we work on have one of these as primary heat, sometimes a second as backup.

Cooling Is Rarely a Standalone System Anymore
Central air conditioning still gets installed on its own, especially alongside an existing furnace with usable ductwork. But a growing share of Southern Maine cooling installs are heat pumps instead — the same outdoor unit and refrigeration cycle as AC, just able to run in reverse for winter heat too, which is why the two get quoted side by side more often than not.
Why an HVAC Job Sometimes Becomes an Electrical Job
New HVAC equipment is one of the most common triggers for a panel upgrade — a heat pump, an electric furnace backup, or a bigger blower motor can push an older 100-amp service past its limit. Because Aces Highlands holds electrical and plumbing licenses alongside HVAC, that panel work, gas line, or condensate line gets handled in the same visit under one permit, rather than becoming three separate contractor calls stacked on top of each other.

We highly recommend Highlands Heating & AC. They are extremely responsive, knowledgeable and do great work. Our boiler stopped working and Elijah was quick to respond after hours on a Friday. He installed a new boiler and heat pump hot water heater.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

I've had three HVAC issues over the past two years. Each time I call, Elija or the office picks up the phone, and my problem is fixed in 24 hrs. Their solutions always feel correct and honest. I cannot recommend them more.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.
HVAC Services FAQs
Which is cheapest to run in Maine — a heat pump, a furnace, or a boiler?
In most Southern Maine homes a cold-climate heat pump delivers the cheapest heat per BTU at current electric rates, followed by natural gas, then propane and oil. The right answer depends on the fuel available at your street and the house itself. We show you the operating numbers for your home rather than guessing.
Do you service every brand of HVAC equipment?
Yes. We are certified on GE and Hitachi heat pumps and work on Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Carrier, Weil-McLain, Buderus, Viessmann, and most other residential equipment. If a part is not available, we tell you before you pay for a second visit.
How fast can you get to a no-heat call?
No-heat calls go to the front of the schedule. In season we usually reach Portland-area homes the same day, and the phone is answered after hours, so you are not waiting until morning to book. Call (207) 670-8616.
Should I repair or replace my heating system?
If the system is under 12 years old and the repair costs less than about a third of replacement, repair usually wins. Past 15 years, with rising fuel bills or repeat failures, replacement — often with a heat pump that also cools — pays back faster. We give you both prices and let you decide.
Do you handle the electrical and plumbing that comes with HVAC work?
Yes. Aces Highlands holds Maine electrical and plumbing licenses in addition to HVAC, so panel upgrades, gas piping, condensate lines, and water heater work happen under one permit with one crew — no second contractor to schedule.
