Our Approach to Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting
How Your Electrical Panel Works
- Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
- Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
- Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
- Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
- Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits
Dead outlets, breakers that will not stay on, lights that flicker when the furnace kicks in — Aces Highlands finds the actual fault and fixes it. Licensed Maine electricians serving Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Gorham, and Greater Portland.
Electrical troubleshooting is detective work. A dead outlet may trace to a tripped GFCI three rooms away; a breaker that keeps tripping may be a failing appliance, a nicked cable, or a worn-out breaker. We test rather than guess.
Portland-area homes make it interesting: knob-and-tube in West End and Munjoy Hill triple-deckers, cloth-wrapped cable from the 1940s, aluminum branch wiring from the 1970s, and thirty years of DIY additions in between. We have seen all of it.
Our electricians carry breakers, GFCI and AFCI devices, and splice hardware, so most faults are fixed in one visit. If the fix is bigger — a failing panel or circuits needing rewiring — you get a written quote, not a surprise.
Anything that smells hot, sparks, or buzzes is an emergency: shut the breaker off and call (207) 670-8616 now. For everything else, request a quote and we will schedule the next available visit.
Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?
A breaker trips for three reasons: overload, a short circuit, or a ground fault. Overloads are the common one — a space heater and a hair dryer on the same 15-amp bedroom circuit will trip it every winter morning.
A breaker that trips instantly with nothing connected points to a short or damaged cable. One that trips at random may be worn out — breakers age and trip below their rating. We test under load to tell the difference.
Why Are My Lights Flickering or Dimming?
A brief dim when the well pump, heat pump, or dryer starts is usually normal voltage drop. Lights that flicker at random, or brighten in one room while dimming in another, are not — that pattern points to a loose neutral.
A loose neutral can push 240 volts onto 120-volt circuits and destroy electronics or start a fire. It may be in your panel, at the meter, or on Central Maine Power's side. Treat it as urgent and call today.
Why Did an Outlet Stop Working?
Start with the GFCI outlets — the ones with test and reset buttons in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outside. One tripped GFCI can kill every downstream outlet on its circuit, including ones in a different room. Press reset before you call.
If not, the usual cause is a failed backstab connection — a conductor pushed into a spring clip instead of wrapped around the screw. One loose clip kills everything after it; we find it and repair the run properly.
How Much Does Electrical Troubleshooting Cost?
Most electrical repair calls in Southern Maine run $150 to $600. Finding a failed breaker, tripped GFCI, or a single bad splice sits at the low end; tracing an intermittent fault through several boxes or replacing damaged cable sits higher.
We quote after diagnosis and before the repair. If troubleshooting turns up a Federal Pacific panel or knob-and-tube an insurer will flag, we say so and quote it separately — never as a condition of fixing what you called about.
What Should I Check Before Calling an Electrician?
Reset every GFCI in the house, check the panel for a breaker sitting between on and off, and unplug whatever was running when the problem started. Note whether the fault is constant or intermittent, and which rooms are affected.
Do not open the panel cover, do not keep resetting a breaker that trips immediately, and do not use a warm or discolored outlet. Those are the calls we would rather take an hour early than a day late.
Flickering Lights, Warm Outlets & When to Stop and Call
Most electrical repair calls fall into a handful of patterns. Knowing which one you're looking at helps you describe the problem — and know which ones can wait for a scheduled appointment and which ones can't.
Flickering Lights: Three Different Problems That Look the Same
- One fixture flickers — usually the bulb, the socket, or the switch itself; the least urgent version.
- Lights dim briefly when a large appliance starts (AC compressor, well pump, dryer) — often normal voltage sag on an undersized circuit or service, worth mentioning at your next visit but rarely an emergency.
- Lights across the whole house flicker or dim randomly, unrelated to any appliance — this points at a loose connection at the panel or even the utility connection itself, and it's the version we treat as urgent, since a loose main connection can arc and heat up unattended.

Warm Outlets, Switches, or Panel Covers
An outlet, switch, or breaker that's warm or hot to the touch means current is meeting resistance somewhere it shouldn't — a loose wire connection, a failing device, or a connection carrying more load than it's rated for. This is one of the more reliable early warning signs of an electrical fire starting, precisely because it gives you a warning before smoke does.
A burning or ozone smell near an outlet, switch, or panel — even faint, even if nothing looks visibly wrong — is not a wait-and-see situation. Turn off what you safely can at the breaker and call. This is exactly the kind of call our 24/7 line exists for.
Warm devices, a burning smell, or a breaker that won't reset after tripping once are all reasons to stop resetting it yourself and call us — including after hours.
Why Breakers Actually Trip
A breaker tripping once, on an obvious cause (a space heater and a hair dryer on the same circuit), is the system working correctly. A breaker that trips repeatedly on light, routine loads — or one that trips with nothing obviously overloaded — usually means either the breaker itself is worn out (breakers do fail with age, just less often than the wiring around them) or there's a fault somewhere on that circuit's wiring.
We trace the actual circuit rather than swap the breaker and hope, since replacing a breaker on a genuine wiring fault just delays the same trip.

Dead Outlets and Partial Outages
A single dead outlet, when the breaker hasn't tripped, is frequently a failed GFCI upstream of it on the same circuit — GFCI outlets can cut power to everything downstream without tripping visibly themselves. Checking every GFCI outlet on the run (kitchen, bath, garage, outdoor) for a tripped RESET button is worth doing before assuming a bigger fault.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting FAQs
Do I need a licensed electrician for a small repair in Maine?
Maine allows a homeowner to wire their own primary residence with a permit and inspection; anyone you hire must hold a Maine electrician license. In practice, insurers and home inspectors flag unpermitted work, and a wrong repair on a neutral or ground is a fire risk. Every Aces Highlands repair is performed under State of Maine electrician license #MS60023157.
Is a warm outlet or switch plate an emergency?
Yes. Heat means a loose connection or an overloaded device, and both are how electrical fires start. Turn off the breaker for that circuit and stop using the outlet until an electrician has opened the box. If you see scorch marks or smell burning plastic, call our emergency line rather than booking a regular visit.
Why does my breaker trip only when it is cold out?
Winter loads. Space heaters, engine block heaters, heat tape on pipes, and a well pump cycling harder all land on circuits that were fine in July. A 1,500-watt heater uses most of a 15-amp circuit by itself. Adding a dedicated circuit for the heater is a small job compared with living with a tripping breaker all winter.
Can you find a fault without opening up my walls?
Almost always. Circuit tracers, a clamp meter, and a methodical check of every box on the circuit locate the fault in the vast majority of cases. Opening drywall is a last resort, and we tell you before we do it.
How long does an electrical troubleshooting visit take?
Most are one to two hours including the repair. Intermittent faults — the ones that only happen at night or when the dryer runs — can take longer because we have to recreate the condition. We keep you informed as the diagnosis narrows and quote before any repair beyond the diagnostic.
Will you tell me if my whole house needs rewiring?
Only if it does. Knob-and-tube, cloth-wrapped cable with crumbling insulation, or aluminum branch wiring showing heat damage are reasons to talk about rewiring. A single bad splice is not. We fix what you called about and give you an honest read on the rest.
