AC Installation for Augusta Homeowners

Augusta homeowners call Aces Highlands for ac installation because we are close by, based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland, and out on Kennebec County roads every day — we know this area's housing, weather and permit process cold.
Maine summers are getting warmer, and a properly sized air conditioning system keeps your home comfortable through every heat wave. Aces Highlands installs high-efficiency cooling — from whole-home heat pumps to single-room ductless units — sized and installed right the first time.
For most Southern Maine homes, the smartest way to add air conditioning is a cold-climate heat pump: it cools efficiently in summer and heats your home the rest of the year, all from one system. We are certified GE and Hitachi installers and work with every major brand to match your home and budget.
If you only need to cool a few rooms — a bedroom, a finished attic, an addition, or a home office — a ductless mini-split delivers targeted, zone-by-zone cooling without any ductwork. Every install begins with a proper load calculation so your system is sized correctly: an oversized AC short-cycles and leaves humidity behind, while an undersized one never keeps up on the hottest days.
Our cooling installations include indoor and outdoor unit placement, refrigerant line routing, electrical connections, and full performance testing. Many systems require an electrical panel upgrade to support the new load — we handle that in-house as a licensed Maine electrical contractor. Ask about our financing options to make your AC installation more affordable.

Augusta Homes and What They Need
Census estimates put Augusta's median home at 1965, with close to 29 percent of the city's housing built before 1940 and nearly 45 percent before 1960. As the state capital, Augusta's stock runs from 19th-century construction near downtown and the Kennebec River to mid-century development further from the center, which means the oldest wiring and piping tends to cluster in the historic core. A rewiring project near downtown Augusta usually starts with figuring out what is actually behind the plaster before any quote gets written.
Heating and Cooling in Augusta
About 59 percent of Augusta households heat primarily with fuel oil, roughly 15 percent with utility gas from Summit Natural Gas of Maine, and 11 percent with electricity, per Census estimates. Sitting inland along the Kennebec River gives Augusta colder overnight lows than the coastal towns closer to Portland. Where a gas main already runs down the street, a furnace replacement is often the simplest swap; elsewhere we are just as likely to be quoting a heat pump alongside the existing oil system.

Getting to Know Augusta
Augusta has been Maine's seat of government since 1827, when lawmakers picked it over Portland, Brunswick and Hallowell; the State House architect Charles Bulfinch designed for the new capital opened in 1832 and still anchors the city today. Long before that, Fort Western went up on the Kennebec in 1754, and Benedict Arnold staged his ill-fated 1775 march on Quebec from its riverbank.
The city actually started life under a different name -- it incorporated as Harrington in February 1797, then renamed itself Augusta before the year was out. That is the kind of civic history that comes with being a state capital, and it is part of why so much of the historic core near the river still stands, complete with the wiring and plumbing generations of it have accumulated.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
There is no franchise behind Aces Highlands — just a Portland-based crew that works Augusta under its own name. Our technicians are not commissioned salespeople and nobody here is required to upsell you anything. Getting invited back is the only metric that matters here.
How Central Air Conditioning Works
- Condenser — outside, rejects heat picked up indoors
- Compressor — pressurizes the refrigerant gas
- Evaporator coil — at the furnace, absorbs heat from indoor air
- Blower — pushes air across the cold coil
- Cool air — delivered through the ducts

Central AC Installation: What to Know Before You Buy
Air conditioning used to be optional in Maine. Between hotter, more humid summers and homes built tighter for heating efficiency, it's become close to standard — but it's worth understanding what you're actually buying.

Codes & Permits for AC Installation in Augusta
In Augusta, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the City of Augusta Bureau of Code Enforcement (16 Cony Street, Augusta, ME 04330, (207) 626-2365). With 18,899 residents, Augusta is required to enforce the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC). Downtown Augusta sits at the head of tide on the Kennebec River and is vulnerable to spring flooding; the 1987 Maine 'Great Flood' affected the city.
- Efficiency Maine offers rebates of up to $9,000 on qualifying heat pumps, but the equipment must be installed by an Efficiency Maine Residential Registered Vendor for the homeowner to receive the rebate. efficiencymaine.com
- Anyone who connects or disconnects gauges or adds/removes refrigerant on a heat pump or air conditioner must hold EPA Section 608 technician certification; the credential does not expire once earned. epa.gov
- The electrical circuit that feeds a new heat pump or AC condenser needs an electrical permit, issued by the Electricians' Examining Board or the town's own electrical inspector, before the wiring is installed or altered. maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles AC Installation in Augusta
- 59% of Augusta households still heat primarily with heating oil, so we size a AC installation around whatever is already running the house and tell you straight whether it is worth keeping as a cold-snap backup.
- Every outdoor unit we set gets its own permitted circuit before it's wired in, and any refrigerant work is done under our EPA Section 608 certification.
- Because Efficiency Maine ties its rebates to Residential Registered Vendor status, we go over what your project actually qualifies for before you commit a dollar.

We highly recommend Highlands Heating & AC. They are extremely responsive, knowledgeable and do great work. Our boiler stopped working and Elijah was quick to respond after hours on a Friday. He installed a new boiler and heat pump hot water heater.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

I've had three HVAC issues over the past two years. Each time I call, Elija or the office picks up the phone, and my problem is fixed in 24 hrs. Their solutions always feel correct and honest. I cannot recommend them more.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

I've had an excellent experience working with them for both electrical and HVAC work as I remodel my 1785 home. I highly recommend them.
AC Installation FAQs
How much does AC installation cost in Maine?
A single-zone ductless system — the most common way to add cooling to a Maine home — typically runs $4,000–$6,000 installed. Whole-home multi-zone heat pump systems cost more. Because these systems also heat, Efficiency Maine rebates on qualifying models often apply.
Is a heat pump or central air better for cooling?
For most Maine homes, a ductless heat pump wins: no ductwork required, higher efficiency, and it heats in winter as well as cools in summer. Central air only tends to make sense if your home already has good ductwork from a forced-air furnace.
Will a mini-split dehumidify my house?
Yes — properly sized, a mini-split removes humidity as it cools, and most models also have a dedicated dry mode for muggy days that are not especially hot. Oversized systems dehumidify poorly, which is why we size from a load calculation.
How long does AC installation take?
Single-zone installations are typically completed in one day. Multi-zone or whole-home systems take two to three days, plus any electrical panel work, which our licensed electricians handle within the same project.
Do I need an electrical upgrade to add AC?
Sometimes. Each outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit, and older 100-amp panels may not have the capacity. We are a licensed Maine electrical contractor as well as an HVAC company, so we evaluate your panel during the estimate and handle any upgrade in-house.
