Wiring & Rewiring for Berwick Homeowners

Need wiring & rewiring in Berwick? Aces Highlands runs out of 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland and covers York County routinely, which means a technician who already understands the area's homes and permit process shows up, not a stranger learning it on the job.
Whether you need a single new circuit or a complete rewire of an older home, Aces Highlands handles residential wiring with precision and code compliance.
Older homes in the Portland area may still have knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring that presents safety risks and insurance issues. We replace outdated wiring with modern copper wiring, properly routed and protected in every wall and ceiling cavity. A rewire often pairs with a panel upgrade for a fully modernized electrical system.
For renovations and additions, we run new circuits, install junction boxes, and ensure proper wire sizing for the intended load. We also handle plumbing and HVAC work for remodel projects, keeping everything under one roof.
Every wiring job includes proper circuit labeling, secure connections, and thorough testing. We pull permits when required and schedule inspections to ensure full code compliance.
Why Berwick Calls Aces Highlands

- Diagnostics come first, upsells do not — the invoice matches the quote
- Booking stays quick because we do not overbook the schedule
- Licensed, insured, and background-checked — neighbors in Berwick leave us reviews on Google
Berwick Homes and What They Need
Berwick's median home was built in 1989, with 16 percent of the housing stock predating 1940 and 21 percent predating 1960 -- a newer profile than you might expect from one of Maine's oldest incorporated towns, since most of the historic core split off with South and North Berwick generations ago.
Power, Storms and Wiring in Berwick
Central Maine Power serves Berwick, with no municipal electric utility in town. Panel upgrades are a routine request as Berwick homeowners add heat pumps and modern appliances to houses built well before either was standard.

Getting to Know Berwick
Berwick was incorporated on June 9, 1713, the ninth town incorporated in what is now Maine, on land the Abenaki knew as Newichawannock, or 'river of many falls.' The town used to be much bigger: South Berwick split off in 1814, and North Berwick followed in 1831.
Diamond Hill, at 490 feet, is Berwick's highest point today -- a modest peak in a town whose real distinction is just how long it's been settled, older than the United States itself.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
Aces Highlands is independently owned and based in greater Portland, with no franchise territory map dictating how Berwick gets treated. Our technicians are not commissioned salespeople and nobody here is required to upsell you anything. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.
How Your Electrical Panel Works
- Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
- Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
- Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
- Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
- Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits
Homeowner Guide
Old Wiring, Explained: Knob-and-Tube and Aluminum Branch Circuits
Southern Maine has a lot of housing stock old enough to have gone through several wiring eras, and two of them come up constantly on inspection reports: knob-and-tube and aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Neither one means your house is unsafe today, but both mean something specific, and homeowners deserve the real explanation instead of a scare pitch.

Codes & Permits for Wiring & Rewiring in Berwick
Electrical work in Berwick is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. Berwick's Code Enforcement Office does not name a municipal electrical inspector; electrical permits and inspections fall under the State of Maine electrical inspection program (Office of Professional & Occupational Regulation / Electricians' Examining Board). South Berwick was set off from Berwick in 1814 and North Berwick in 1831; those two neighboring towns — not Berwick itself — are on Unitil's piped natural-gas service list.
- CPSC Publication 516 ('Repairing Aluminum Wiring') states that homes built before 1965 are unlikely to have aluminum branch-circuit wiring, while homes built between 1965 and the mid-1970s may have it; a Franklin Research Institute survey found that homes with this pre-1972 aluminum wiring are 55 times more likely to have a connection reach 'Fire Hazard Conditions' at a receptacle, switch, or other connection point than a home wired with copper. The underlying hazard is heat building up at the aluminum-to-device connection, not the aluminum wire itself failing. cpsc.gov
- CPSC recognizes three permanent repair methods for aluminum branch-circuit wiring: (1) complete rewiring with copper, (2) the COPALUM crimp connection system, and (3) an approved 'alternative repair method' using a listed connector such as an AlumiConn connector to pigtail a short length of copper wire onto the existing aluminum conductor. CPSC does not list simply swapping in CO/ALR-rated devices as one of its three approved permanent repairs, and does not endorse do-it-yourself repair. cpsc.gov
- Any work extending, altering, or replacing existing wiring — including older knob-and-tube or aluminum branch-circuit wiring found in Maine's older housing stock — must be performed by a Maine-licensed electrician and brought up to the currently adopted 2026 NEC for the portion of the system being worked on. maine.gov
- For a single-family dwelling exempted from the state permit, the Board's Single-Family Dwelling Certification page states the underlying rule: 'Any electrical installations made in a newly constructed residence shall require certification by a State or Local Inspector, Master Electrician or Limited Electrician in House Wiring prior to the activation of electricity by the utility company.' This certification step (rather than a standard state permit) is what lets an owner wire their own single-family home. maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles Wiring & Rewiring in Berwick
- With 16% of housing in Berwick built before 1940, we regularly find knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring on a rewiring job; the section we touch gets rebuilt to today's code, full stop.
- Swapping a switch or outlet for an identical one is exempt "minor repair work" under Maine law; extending or adding circuits is not, and gets its own permit before we start.
- Every circuit we touch gets tested and labeled, and any new run is built to the 2026 NEC — the edition Maine requires for work starting July 1, 2026 on.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

Wiring & Rewiring FAQs
Will my insurance company cover a home with knob-and-tube wiring?
Increasingly, no. Many insurers in Maine decline coverage or charge steep premiums for homes with active knob-and-tube, and some require replacement before closing on a sale. Rewiring resolves the insurance problem and removes a genuine fire risk at the same time.
How much does it cost to rewire a house?
Nationally, whole-home rewiring typically runs $4-$10+ per square foot depending on access, home age, and finish level — a partial rewire of only the original circuits costs far less. After walking your home, we quote a firm written price so there are no surprises.
Do you have to open up all my walls to rewire?
No. We fish new wiring through existing cavities from basements, attics, and small access openings. Some targeted drywall openings are usually necessary, but they are modest and easy to patch — nothing like the gut job people imagine.
How long does a whole-home rewire take?
Most single-family rewires take several days to a week depending on size and access. We stage the work so you keep power in the rooms you are living in, and we walk you through the schedule before we start.
Can I just add GFCI outlets instead of rewiring?
Sometimes. GFCI protection can add shock protection to ungrounded circuits and is a legitimate, code-recognized improvement. But it does not fix deteriorated insulation or overloaded conductors. We will tell you honestly which situation you have — protection upgrade or genuine rewire.
