Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting for Brunswick Homeowners

Dead Circuits & Tripping Breakers
Licensed Maine Electrician
Diagnosed & Quoted On Site

Brunswick homeowners call Aces Highlands for electrical repair & troubleshooting because we are close by, based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland, and out on Cumberland County roads every day — we know this area's housing, weather and permit process cold.

Dead outlets, breakers that will not stay on, lights that flicker when the furnace kicks in — Aces Highlands finds the actual fault and fixes it. Licensed Maine electricians serving Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Gorham, and Greater Portland.

Electrical troubleshooting is detective work. A dead outlet may trace to a tripped GFCI three rooms away; a breaker that keeps tripping may be a failing appliance, a nicked cable, or a worn-out breaker. We test rather than guess.

Portland-area homes make it interesting: knob-and-tube in West End and Munjoy Hill triple-deckers, cloth-wrapped cable from the 1940s, aluminum branch wiring from the 1970s, and thirty years of DIY additions in between. We have seen all of it.

Our electricians carry breakers, GFCI and AFCI devices, and splice hardware, so most faults are fixed in one visit. If the fix is bigger — a failing panel or circuits needing rewiring — you get a written quote, not a surprise.

Anything that smells hot, sparks, or buzzes is an emergency: shut the breaker off and call (207) 670-8616 now. For everything else, request a quote and we will schedule the next available visit.

Brunswick Homes and What They Need

Brunswick has the most mixed housing in this part of the coast. Census estimates count about 9,500 homes with a median build year of 1982; roughly 20 percent were built before 1940 and nearly half before 1980. Only about half are detached single-family houses, since the town also has apartments, college housing and mobile homes, about one in eight units. The Federal and Victorian streets near Bowdoin and downtown are the oldest, while the McKeen Street neighbourhood, built for Navy families in the 1950s and 60s, was sold off as some 230 homes after the air station closed. Each era brings its own wiring: knob-and-tube and fuse boxes can still turn up in the old core, and base houses carry services sized for 1950s loads. A panel upgrade in a Brunswick home is often needed before adding heat pumps or an EV charger.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Brunswick

Most of Brunswick buys power from Central Maine Power, but Brunswick Landing is different: the former naval air station runs its own electric grid, about 17 miles of lines the Navy built, operated by the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which pays CMP to deliver power to it and adds on-site solar and battery storage. Elsewhere in town, shoreline neighbourhoods on the bays catch the wind in coastal nor'easters like the ones in 2017 and 2023. Brunswick has a large work-from-home population, around one in five workers, and about a third of commuters drive 30 minutes or more each way, which suits overnight charging at home. A home EV charger in Brunswick usually makes sense on a panel that has room for a dedicated 240-volt circuit.

Getting to Know Brunswick

Brunswick is home to Bowdoin College, chartered in 1794 as Maine's first college. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" while living on Federal Street in 1851, and Joshua Chamberlain — the Bowdoin professor turned Civil War hero who accepted the Confederate infantry's surrender at Appomattox — later served as Maine's governor and Bowdoin's president. The former Naval Air Station is now Brunswick Landing, one of Maine's largest business and technology campuses.

Brunswick's Federal-era and Victorian homes around the college are beautiful — and demanding. Panel upgrades, careful rewiring, and heating systems that respect historic construction are everyday work for our crew here.

Local & Independent — Not a Franchise

We are an independent, Portland-based company, not a franchise chain routing your Brunswick job to a call center. Our technicians are not commissioned salespeople and nobody here is required to upsell you anything. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.

How Your Electrical Panel Works

  1. Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
  2. Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
  3. Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
  4. Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
  5. Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits

Codes & Permits for Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Brunswick

Electrical work in Brunswick is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. Brunswick's Planning & Codes Office (85 Union Street) issues electrical permits directly; its permits page states "An Electrical Permit is required whenever electrical work is done. A licensed State of Maine Electrician must do the work unless it is completed by the homeowner occupying the building," confirming local administration under 32 M.R.S. ch. 17 (no individual inspector named on the page). Brunswick's housing stock is comparatively newer than Portland's or South Portland's — median year built 1982, with only ~19.5% of homes built in 1939 or earlier (ACS 2020–2024 via Census Reporter).

  • Repair work that goes beyond the minor-repair list — for example, replacing damaged branch-circuit wiring rather than just a fixture, or repairing/replacing a panel or service component — requires the standard electrical permit from whichever authority (state or municipal) covers that address. maine.gov
  • State law exempts 'minor repair work' from the electrical permit entirely: 'the replacement of lamps, fuses, lighting fixtures, switches and sockets, the installation and repair of outlets, radio and other low voltage equipment and the repair of entrance service equipment.' maine.gov
  • That exemption is from the STATE permit only. A municipality that has set up its own electrical inspection program under 30 M.R.S. §4173 can define its own scope of what needs a local permit; South Berwick's code enforcement office, for example, states plainly that 'Single Family Residential does not require an electrical permit or inspection' locally, while 'Multi-Unit Dwellings and Commercial projects must obtain an electrical permit from the State Electrical Office' — i.e., South Berwick itself does not run its own inspector and refers everything to the state. mainelegislature.org
  • Central Maine Power (CMP), a subsidiary of Avangrid, describes itself as serving 'approximately 670,520 electricity customers in an 11,000 square-mile service area in central and southern Maine' — the region that contains the entire Augusta-to-York corridor. Consistent with this, South Portland's own permitting page requires a CMP account/work-order number on any electrical permit tied to a service change, and Buxton's electrical permit application has a dedicated field for the applicant's CMP account number. cmpco.com

How Aces Highlands Handles Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Brunswick

  • Small fixes (fuses, lamps, switches, sockets, outlets, entrance-service repair) are exempt minor repair work under state law; we still verify and note what was actually wrong.
  • That exemption is a state floor, not a ceiling — some Maine towns run a tighter local program, so we check Brunswick's own rule before assuming a repair needs no paperwork.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

I've had an excellent experience working with them for both electrical and HVAC work as I remodel my 1785 home. I highly recommend them.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

Highly recommend! Cannot thank them enough for fixing my water heater. Elijah is very reliable and communicative. No hassle, no phone tag, transparent with cost and quick to repair the issue. I know who to call if I need help again!

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting FAQs

Do I need a licensed electrician for a small repair in Maine?

Maine allows a homeowner to wire their own primary residence with a permit and inspection; anyone you hire must hold a Maine electrician license. In practice, insurers and home inspectors flag unpermitted work, and a wrong repair on a neutral or ground is a fire risk. Every Aces Highlands repair is performed under State of Maine electrician license #MS60023157.

Is a warm outlet or switch plate an emergency?

Yes. Heat means a loose connection or an overloaded device, and both are how electrical fires start. Turn off the breaker for that circuit and stop using the outlet until an electrician has opened the box. If you see scorch marks or smell burning plastic, call our emergency line rather than booking a regular visit.

Why does my breaker trip only when it is cold out?

Winter loads. Space heaters, engine block heaters, heat tape on pipes, and a well pump cycling harder all land on circuits that were fine in July. A 1,500-watt heater uses most of a 15-amp circuit by itself. Adding a dedicated circuit for the heater is a small job compared with living with a tripping breaker all winter.

Can you find a fault without opening up my walls?

Almost always. Circuit tracers, a clamp meter, and a methodical check of every box on the circuit locate the fault in the vast majority of cases. Opening drywall is a last resort, and we tell you before we do it.

How long does an electrical troubleshooting visit take?

Most are one to two hours including the repair. Intermittent faults — the ones that only happen at night or when the dryer runs — can take longer because we have to recreate the condition. We keep you informed as the diagnosis narrows and quote before any repair beyond the diagnostic.

Will you tell me if my whole house needs rewiring?

Only if it does. Knob-and-tube, cloth-wrapped cable with crumbling insulation, or aluminum branch wiring showing heat damage are reasons to talk about rewiring. A single bad splice is not. We fix what you called about and give you an honest read on the rest.
