Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting for Falmouth Homeowners

Dead Circuits & Tripping Breakers
Licensed Maine Electrician
Diagnosed & Quoted On Site
Residential electrical service panel with the cover removed

Falmouth sits in Cumberland County, part of the territory Aces Highlands covers out of 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland every week — so a call for electrical repair & troubleshooting gets a technician who already knows the local housing and codes, not a first-timer.

Dead outlets, breakers that will not stay on, lights that flicker when the furnace kicks in — Aces Highlands finds the actual fault and fixes it. Licensed Maine electricians serving Portland, South Portland, Scarborough, Westbrook, Gorham, and Greater Portland.

Electrical troubleshooting is detective work. A dead outlet may trace to a tripped GFCI three rooms away; a breaker that keeps tripping may be a failing appliance, a nicked cable, or a worn-out breaker. We test rather than guess.

Portland-area homes make it interesting: knob-and-tube in West End and Munjoy Hill triple-deckers, cloth-wrapped cable from the 1940s, aluminum branch wiring from the 1970s, and thirty years of DIY additions in between. We have seen all of it.

Our electricians carry breakers, GFCI and AFCI devices, and splice hardware, so most faults are fixed in one visit. If the fix is bigger — a failing panel or circuits needing rewiring — you get a written quote, not a surprise.

Anything that smells hot, sparks, or buzzes is an emergency: shut the breaker off and call (207) 670-8616 now. For everything else, request a quote and we will schedule the next available visit.

Falmouth Homes and What They Need

Falmouth's housing is younger than most of Greater Portland. Census estimates put the median home here at 1986, and roughly 14 percent of homes have been built since 2010, many of them in newer subdivisions. The older layer is still real: about 14 percent of homes predate 1940 and about four in ten predate 1980, from Falmouth Foreside along Route 88 to West Falmouth Corner and Highland Lake. Around 80 percent of homes are single-family detached houses, and most are owner-occupied. In practice that means two very different kinds of job in one town: a newer colonial with PEX, a mechanical room and room for ductwork, and a Foreside house with copper or galvanized supply lines, tired shutoff valves and pinhole leaks that need tracing behind finished walls.

Power, Storms and Wiring in Falmouth

Central Maine Power serves Falmouth, and the town's tree-lined roads have taken real hits. In the January 1998 ice storm, Falmouth was among the Greater Portland towns that bore the brunt of the damage, and the December 2023 wind and rain storm left more than 56,000 Cumberland County customers without power at its height. Census estimates show about a third of Falmouth workers now work from home, which turns a two-day outage into lost work as well as a cold house, and makes a transfer switch or standby generator worth pricing before the next storm. The other trend is charging: short commutes into Portland suit electric vehicles, and many of the town's 1980s and 1990s houses have 100 or 150 amp panels already crowded with circuits. A load calculation shows whether a Level 2 EV charger in the garage fits on the existing service or needs an upgrade first.

Getting to Know Falmouth

The original town of Falmouth once encompassed what are now Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, and Cape Elizabeth — those communities were all carved out of it over time. Just offshore, Mackworth Island was Governor Percival Baxter's family retreat before he deeded it to the State of Maine in 1943; today it is famous for the "fairy houses" visitors build in its woods and for Baxter's stone-walled memorial to his Irish Setters.

Modern Falmouth is known for well-kept homes with high-end finishes — the kind of properties where clean line-set routing, tidy penetrations, and spotless job sites matter. That is how we work.

Local & Independent — Not a Franchise

Aces Highlands answers to Falmouth homeowners directly, not a franchise office somewhere else in the country. Our techs are paid to do the job right, not to upsell — no commission structure pushes them toward extra work. We do the work you called us for, do it right, and earn the next call. That is the whole business model.

How Your Electrical Panel Works

  1. Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
  2. Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
  3. Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
  4. Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
  5. Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits

Codes & Permits for Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Falmouth

Electrical work in Falmouth is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. Confirmed live on the Code Enforcement Division page: the division is responsible for "Issuing all permits associated with construction projects (e.g., building, plumbing, heating, and electrical)" and requires a current Maine electrician's license before work is inspected. The division functions as Falmouth's Local Electrical Inspector under Maine's electrician licensing law (32 M.R.S. ch. 17); no individual inspector was named on the page. Shoreland zoning applies within 250 ft of any great pond, river, saltwater body, or coastal wetland, and within 100 ft of streams/brooks; permits are required for many activities in that zone.

  • Repair work that goes beyond the minor-repair list — for example, replacing damaged branch-circuit wiring rather than just a fixture, or repairing/replacing a panel or service component — requires the standard electrical permit from whichever authority (state or municipal) covers that address. maine.gov
  • State law exempts 'minor repair work' from the electrical permit entirely: 'the replacement of lamps, fuses, lighting fixtures, switches and sockets, the installation and repair of outlets, radio and other low voltage equipment and the repair of entrance service equipment.' maine.gov
  • That exemption is from the STATE permit only. A municipality that has set up its own electrical inspection program under 30 M.R.S. §4173 can define its own scope of what needs a local permit; South Berwick's code enforcement office, for example, states plainly that 'Single Family Residential does not require an electrical permit or inspection' locally, while 'Multi-Unit Dwellings and Commercial projects must obtain an electrical permit from the State Electrical Office' — i.e., South Berwick itself does not run its own inspector and refers everything to the state. mainelegislature.org
  • State law: 'No electrical equipment may be installed or altered unless the person making the installation first obtains a permit from the Electricians' Examining Board, or towns/cities that have their own electrical inspector.' Exceptions to the state permit include: single-family dwellings (certification is needed on single-family dwellings, or a licensed Master electrician may verify the work); utility-company work on its own equipment; and 'minor repair work, including the replacement of lamps, fuses, lighting fixtures, switches and sockets, the installation and repair of outlets, radio and other low voltage equipment and the repair of entrance service equipment.' maine.gov

How Aces Highlands Handles Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting in Falmouth

  • Small fixes (fuses, lamps, switches, sockets, outlets, entrance-service repair) are exempt minor repair work under state law; we still verify and note what was actually wrong.
  • Individual Maine towns can set their own, stricter electrical-permit scope on top of the state exemption, so we confirm what Falmouth specifically requires rather than guessing.

I've had an excellent experience working with them for both electrical and HVAC work as I remodel my 1785 home. I highly recommend them.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

  • Susan Donegan

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

  • Ryan Eling

This team was called in by my property management company for where I rent. Elijah and his team were professional, clear speaking. Good communicators gave me the real deal. Didn't give any runaround. I trust them and want to use them for my own projects.

I've had three HVAC issues over the past two years. Each time I call, Elija or the office picks up the phone, and my problem is fixed in 24 hrs. Their solutions always feel correct and honest. I cannot recommend them more.

Electrical Repair & Troubleshooting FAQs

Do I need a licensed electrician for a small repair in Maine?

Maine allows a homeowner to wire their own primary residence with a permit and inspection; anyone you hire must hold a Maine electrician license. In practice, insurers and home inspectors flag unpermitted work, and a wrong repair on a neutral or ground is a fire risk. Every Aces Highlands repair is performed under State of Maine electrician license #MS60023157.

Is a warm outlet or switch plate an emergency?

Yes. Heat means a loose connection or an overloaded device, and both are how electrical fires start. Turn off the breaker for that circuit and stop using the outlet until an electrician has opened the box. If you see scorch marks or smell burning plastic, call our emergency line rather than booking a regular visit.

Why does my breaker trip only when it is cold out?

Winter loads. Space heaters, engine block heaters, heat tape on pipes, and a well pump cycling harder all land on circuits that were fine in July. A 1,500-watt heater uses most of a 15-amp circuit by itself. Adding a dedicated circuit for the heater is a small job compared with living with a tripping breaker all winter.

Can you find a fault without opening up my walls?

Almost always. Circuit tracers, a clamp meter, and a methodical check of every box on the circuit locate the fault in the vast majority of cases. Opening drywall is a last resort, and we tell you before we do it.

How long does an electrical troubleshooting visit take?

Most are one to two hours including the repair. Intermittent faults — the ones that only happen at night or when the dryer runs — can take longer because we have to recreate the condition. We keep you informed as the diagnosis narrows and quote before any repair beyond the diagnostic.

Will you tell me if my whole house needs rewiring?

Only if it does. Knob-and-tube, cloth-wrapped cable with crumbling insulation, or aluminum branch wiring showing heat damage are reasons to talk about rewiring. A single bad splice is not. We fix what you called about and give you an honest read on the rest.
