Outlet & Switch Installation for York Homeowners

For outlet & switch installation in York, homeowners turn to Aces Highlands: a Portland-based crew (508 Riverside St Unit 1) that is minutes from York County and already familiar with the homes, climate and codes here.
Aces Highlands installs and replaces electrical outlets and switches throughout your home -- from adding GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms to installing smart switches and USB charging outlets.
Modern homes need more outlets than ever. We install additional outlets where you need them, upgrade existing outlets to GFCI or AFCI protection where code requires, and add USB charging outlets for convenience. If your home needs additional circuits to support new outlets, we also provide wiring and circuit installation services.
We install dimmer switches, three-way switches, timer switches, and smart switches compatible with popular home automation systems. Every installation is done cleanly with proper wire connections and secure mounting.
If your outlets are old, loose, or showing signs of damage like scorch marks or a burning smell, replacement is a safety priority. We diagnose the issue, replace the outlet or switch, and check the circuit to make sure everything is safe. Pair new switches with updated lighting fixtures for a complete room upgrade.

York Homes and What They Need
York's housing stock is largely mid-to-late 20th century, with a median build year of 1977 and about 22 percent of homes predating 1940. The town's large land area and coastal villages support a big seasonal and vacation-home population alongside year-round residents, which shows up as a wide range of system ages and quality on our service calls.
Power, Storms and Wiring in York
Central Maine Power serves York. With most of the town on private wells rather than a public system, losing power also means losing water pressure, which is why standby generator installation is such a common request across York's rural sections.

Getting to Know York
York was first settled in 1624 as Agamenticus, and Sir Ferdinando Gorges chartered it as 'Gorgeana' in 1642 -- a charter sometimes cited as the first incorporated city in what is now the United States. It was reincorporated as York in 1652 under the Massachusetts Bay Colony, making it the second-oldest incorporated town in Maine, just two years behind Kittery.
A photograph of York's Cape Neddick 'Nubble' Light is included on the Voyager 1 Golden Record, labeled simply 'Seashore, Maine.' The town became a fashionable summer resort after the Civil War and still shows off Gilded Age, shingle-style architecture across its historic districts.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
There is no franchise behind Aces Highlands — just a Portland-based crew that works York under its own name. Nobody on our crew works on commission, so there is no incentive to sell you more than the job needs. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.
Homeowner Guide
Outlets, Switches & Nuisance Tripping: A Homeowner's Guide
Two outlet questions come up more than any others on our service calls: "why does this keep tripping," and "do I need one of the buttons-in-the-middle outlets here." Both have real code-driven answers, not just personal preference.

Codes & Permits for Outlet & Switch Installation in York
Electrical work in York is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. York's Code Enforcement staff directory lists a Director of Code Enforcement, three Assistant Code Enforcement Officers, and an 'Inspector,' but no position titled 'Electrical Inspector' and no mention of electrical permits on the department's main page — suggesting electrical inspections may rely on the State of Maine electrical inspection program (Office of Professional & Occupational Regulation / Electricians' Examining Board, https://www.maine.gov/pfr/professionallicensing/professions/electricians) rather than a dedicated local inspector, though this was not explicitly confirmed by the town. York's Code Enforcement Office administers Historic District Commission (HDC) review for York Village and other historic areas, which can affect exterior work such as HVAC unit placement.
- Maine's 2026 Chapter 120 amends NEC 210.8 GFCI requirements for dwelling units to include kitchen receptacles at 210.8(A)(7), for other-than-dwelling kitchens at 210.8(B)(2), and for outdoor outlets at 210.8(F) — covering garages with floors at or below grade, accessory buildings, and boathouses, with listed exceptions for HVAC equipment (a listed HVAC exception expires September 1, 2026, replaced by a Class C SPGFCI option), water pumps, and sewer pumps. maine.gov
- Chapter 120 also amends NEC 406.9(C)(1): receptacles may not be installed within or directly over a bathtub or shower stall. maine.gov
- Maine's Chapter 120 amendment list does not modify NEC 210.12 (AFCI protection) or 406.12 (tamper-resistant receptacles), so both apply in Maine exactly as published in the 2026 NEC. maine.gov
- Maine's Electricians' Examining Board has adopted the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), effective for all electrical installations commencing on or after July 1, 2026, subject to Maine's own amendments and exclusions set out in Chapter 120 (Electrical Installation Standards). The prior standard was the 2023 NEC, effective July 1, 2024. maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles Outlet & Switch Installation in York
- Replacing an existing outlet or switch is exempt minor repair work; running a brand-new circuit for one is not, and we permit that half of the job accordingly.
- New GFCI requirements under the 2026 code cover kitchens, outdoor outlets and below-grade garages in Maine; any outlet we install or replace in those spots gets GFCI protection to match.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

I've had an excellent experience working with them for both electrical and HVAC work as I remodel my 1785 home. I highly recommend them.

We highly recommend Highlands Heating & AC. They are extremely responsive, knowledgeable and do great work. Our boiler stopped working and Elijah was quick to respond after hours on a Friday. He installed a new boiler and heat pump hot water heater.

Highly recommend! Cannot thank them enough for fixing my water heater. Elijah is very reliable and communicative. No hassle, no phone tag, transparent with cost and quick to repair the issue. I know who to call if I need help again!

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.
Outlet & Switch Installation FAQs
Why is my outlet warm or buzzing?
Warmth, buzzing, or sparking usually means a loose or deteriorated connection inside the outlet — a fire risk that gets worse with use. Stop using the outlet and have it replaced promptly. It is typically a quick, inexpensive repair.
Can two-prong outlets be upgraded to three-prong?
Yes. If a ground path exists in the box, a straightforward swap works. If the circuit is ungrounded, code allows GFCI outlets labeled "No Equipment Ground" as a safe replacement, or we can run a properly grounded circuit. We check the wiring first and give you both prices where both apply.
Where do I need GFCI outlets in my house?
Modern code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, unfinished basements, and outdoors — essentially anywhere near water or ground contact. Older homes are grandfathered, but adding GFCIs in those locations is a low-cost safety upgrade we strongly recommend.
How much does it cost to add or replace an outlet?
Replacing an existing outlet or switch is typically a modest service call; adding a brand-new outlet where none exists costs more because it involves running cable, nationally often $150-$350 per location depending on access. We quote before we work, and the quote is the price.
Can you install smart switches and dimmers I bought myself?
Yes. We install customer-supplied smart switches, dimmers, and USB outlets all the time — and we will flag compatibility issues (like dimmers that need a neutral wire your box may not have) before anything goes in the wall.
