Sewer Line Repair & Replacement for Kennebunkport Homeowners

When Kennebunkport homeowners need sewer line repair & replacement, Aces Highlands is the local team to call. We are based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland — a short drive from Kennebunkport in York County — so we respond quickly and know the homes, the weather, and the codes in your area.
Sewage backing up through a basement floor drain usually means the main line between your house and the street has failed. Aces Highlands diagnoses with a camera, repairs what is broken, and replaces only when replacement is the honest answer.
The sewer lateral carries everything from your house to the city main or septic tank. In Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook, many laterals are original clay or cast iron from the early 1900s and are nearing end of life.
Tree roots find the joints in clay pipe, cast iron rusts until the bottom of the pipe is gone, and frost heave shifts sections out of line. The result: a line that clogs every few months until it collapses.
We start every sewer call with a camera, not a shovel. Seeing the break, its depth, and distance from the house tells us whether a cleaning, a spot repair, or full replacement is right. We show you the footage.
Sewer work in Portland involves plumbing permits, a licensed plumber for the connection, and a street-opening permit near the main. We handle paperwork, coordinate with the city, and restore your lawn or driveway. Active backups are an emergency call.

Kennebunkport Homes and What They Need
Kennebunkport's median home was built in 1982, with about 13 percent of units predating 1940 and 29 percent predating 1960 -- a mix of early-1900s shingle-style cottages in the Cape Arundel Summer Colony Historic District alongside newer coastal construction. Those older cottages are prime candidates for a heat pump retrofit that extends comfortable use into the shoulder seasons.
Water Supply and Drains in Kennebunkport
Public water comes from the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport & Wells Water District, drawing from the Branch Brook watershed, while sewage is collected and treated by the town's own Wastewater Department at a plant on Recreation Way -- a town department rather than a separate district, unlike some of its neighbors. That town-run system runs nearly 100,000 feet of gravity sewer and dozens of pump stations.

Getting to Know Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport was first incorporated in 1653 as Cape Porpus, renamed Arundel in 1701, and finally took its current name in 1821 to reflect a growing shipbuilding and trading economy. Walker's Point, the Bush family's summer estate here, has hosted world leaders including Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev.
Cape Porpoise remains a working fishing harbor village within the town, keeping its own restaurants, church, library and commercial fleet. The Cape Arundel Summer Colony Historic District, running from Chick's Creek to Walker's Point, is full of early-1900s shingle-style summer cottages that still define much of the town's coastline.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
We are an independent, Portland-based company, not a franchise chain routing your Kennebunkport job to a call center. Our technicians are not commissioned salespeople and nobody here is required to upsell you anything. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.
How Your Drain-Waste-Vent System Works
- Fixture drains — sinks, tubs, and toilets
- Main stack — collects branch lines and vents through the roof
- Vent — keeps trap seals from siphoning dry
- Cleanout — access point for clearing clogs
- Building sewer — carries wastewater to the street main

Sewer Line Repair: Camera Inspections, Roots & Trenchless Options
A failing sewer line is one of the more expensive plumbing problems a homeowner can face, which is exactly why diagnosing it correctly before digging matters as much as the repair itself.

Codes & Permits for Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Kennebunkport
In Kennebunkport, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Town of Kennebunkport Planning and Development Department (Code Enforcement Office) (6 Elm Street, Kennebunkport, ME 04046, (207) 967-1602 (Code Enforcement Officer); (207) 967-4243 (Town Office main)). With 3,684 residents, Kennebunkport is under the 4,000-resident line at which Maine requires a town to enforce MUBEC. Sewage is treated in-house by the Town's own Wastewater Department (not a separate sewer district) at a plant on Recreation Way.
- The Local Plumbing Inspector who issues internal plumbing permits also enforces the state's Subsurface Wastewater Disposal rules for septic systems in their municipality. mainelegislature.org
- Where a municipal ordinance requires it, the owner of a building that abuts a street containing a sewer must connect that building to the sewer and stop using any other wastewater disposal method. mainelegislature.org
- In a sanitary district, an owner whose building is within 200 feet of a district sewer must connect within 90 days of being asked to, though the district can't force the owner to buy land or an easement just to make the connection; existing properties with a functioning private system are exempt as long as it stays compliant. legislature.maine.gov
- Every Maine municipality must annually appoint at least one Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI), who does not have to live in that town, to issue plumbing permits and enforce the state's plumbing rules and Subsurface Wastewater Disposal (septic) rules locally. mainelegislature.org
How Aces Highlands Handles Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Kennebunkport
- Town of Kennebunkport Wastewater Department (a department of the Town, not a separate district) runs Kennebunkport's public sewer, treating it at Town-operated Wastewater Treatment Plant & Compost Facility at 25 Recreation Way, Kennebunkport; runs 24/7 with ~95,000 ft of gravity sewer, 16 pump stations and 88 grinder pumps. The lateral from your foundation to the main is the owner's line, so we scope it before recommending any digging.
- 29% of Kennebunkport's homes went up before 1960 — the cast-iron and clay-lateral era, and exactly the kind of line that cracks and lets roots in.
- A failed septic system requires an HHE-200 design from a licensed Site Evaluator plus a Local Plumbing Inspector permit — we line up both before any excavator shows up.

Sewer Line Repair & Replacement FAQs
Who is responsible for the sewer line — me or the city?
In Portland and most Southern Maine towns, the homeowner owns and maintains the lateral from the house all the way to the connection at the city main, including the section under the sidewalk and street. The city is responsible for the main itself. Check your town's sewer ordinance for the exact boundary; we can help you read it.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line replacement?
Usually not under a standard policy. Some insurers offer a service-line endorsement for a small annual premium that covers the lateral, and some cover the resulting water damage but not the pipe. Call your agent before the work starts, and ask us for the camera footage — insurers often want it.
How long does a sewer line replacement take?
Most full replacements take one to three days from the first shovel to backfill, plus a day or two beforehand for Dig Safe locates and permits. Spot repairs are often finished in a single day. You will be without drains for part of that time; we tell you exactly when before we start.
Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line in Maine?
Yes. Sewer lateral work requires a plumbing permit and an inspection before backfill, and work in a city street or sidewalk needs a street-opening permit. The connection itself must be made by a licensed Maine plumber. We pull every permit and schedule the inspections.
Can tree roots really break a sewer pipe?
Yes. Roots enter at the joints of clay pipe seeking water, then grow until they crack the pipe or fill it completely. Cutting the roots restores flow for a season or two; the permanent fix is replacing the joint they enter through or the whole run. Maples and willows near the pipe path are the usual culprits.
Is trenchless sewer repair available in Portland?
It depends on the pipe. Cured-in-place lining needs a host pipe that still holds its shape; pipe bursting needs room to pull a new pipe through and access pits at each end. Collapsed sections, bellies, and multiple bends often rule them out. The camera inspection tells us, and we quote both ways when both are possible.
