Lewiston Homes and What They Need
Lewiston's median home was built in 1957, with about 32 percent of the housing stock dating before 1940 and 54 percent before 1960 -- a mill-city profile concentrated in the tenement and triple-decker neighborhoods that grew up around the Bates Mill complex in the late 1800s and early 1900s. That density and age combination means plumbing work in older Lewiston buildings often has to account for shared walls and stacked units, not just a single-family layout.
Heating and Cooling in Lewiston
About 53 percent of Lewiston households heat mainly with fuel oil, 23 percent with utility gas, and 10 percent with electricity, per Census estimates, though Lewiston is not in Summit Natural Gas of Maine's published service area, so that utility-gas share likely reflects an older, more limited local distribution system rather than a modern buildout. Either way, a lot of Lewiston's oil-heated multi-unit buildings are strong candidates for a heat pump retrofit.

Getting to Know Lewiston
Lewiston grew up around Lewiston Falls on the Androscoggin River, which started powering the Bates Manufacturing Company's mill complex in 1852. For roughly three decades, Bates was Maine's single largest employer, and it stayed one of Lewiston's biggest employers well into the 20th century, a scale of industry that shaped the city's dense, mill-town neighborhoods.
The Androscoggin River still forms Lewiston's western border, separating it from twin city Auburn, and the two towns share more than a river: Lewiston draws its water through the jointly run Auburn Water District. That kind of shared infrastructure is common between the two cities, a legacy of how closely their industrial histories are tied together.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
There is no franchise behind Aces Highlands — just a Portland-based crew that works Lewiston under its own name. Every technician is paid to solve the problem in front of them, not to hit an upsell quota. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.
How a Boiler Works
- Burner — ignites fuel to heat the exchanger
- Heat exchanger — heats the water circulating in the loop
- Circulator pump — pushes hot water through the loop
- Expansion tank — absorbs pressure as water heats and expands
- Baseboard loop — hot water out, cooler water returns

Codes & Permits for Boiler Repair in Lewiston
In Lewiston, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Planning & Code Enforcement, City of Lewiston (27 Pine Street, Lewiston, ME 04240, 207-513-3000). The city's Electrical Services Division jointly operates a UV/chemical disinfection facility with the Auburn Water District for the shared Lewiston/Auburn water supply, reflecting how closely the two cities' utilities are intertwined.

How Aces Highlands Handles Boiler Repair in Lewiston
- About 53% of Lewiston homes heat with heating oil today. Oil equipment is installed to NFPA 31, gas and propane to NFPA 54/58, and every vent or chimney tie-in to NFPA 211.
- Once a boiler repair is finished, we check that carbon monoxide detectors are actually present near the bedrooms — Maine law requires them in any home heated by fuel-burning equipment.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

Boiler Repair FAQs
My boiler has no heat — what should I check before calling?
Check the thermostat is calling for heat, the emergency switch (usually a red switch at the top of the basement stairs) was not flipped off, the breaker is on, and — for oil systems — that you have fuel in the tank. Press the red reset button on an oil burner no more than once. If none of that restores heat, call us rather than repeatedly hitting reset, which can flood the chamber with oil.
Why is my boiler making a banging or rumbling noise?
That kettling sound usually means scale buildup on the heat exchanger or air trapped in the system — both fixable, and both worth addressing promptly since kettling stresses the boiler and wastes fuel.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?
A leak somewhere in the system loop, a failing expansion tank, or a relief valve that is weeping. Small leaks are not always visible — they can hide in a slab or wall — and continually topping off with fresh water accelerates corrosion, so it is worth diagnosing rather than living with.
Is a leaking boiler an emergency?
Treat it as one. A minor fitting drip is often a quick fix, but a leak from the boiler block itself means the heat exchanger has failed. Either way, shut off the water feed if the leak is significant and call — water damage compounds by the hour.
How much does boiler repair cost?
Common repairs like circulator pumps, zone valves, and ignition components typically run from a couple hundred dollars up to around a thousand depending on the part. We diagnose first, quote the exact repair before doing it, and never invoice you for guesswork parts.
