Outlet & Switch Installation for New Gloucester Homeowners

When New Gloucester homeowners need outlet & switch installation, Aces Highlands is the local team to call. We are based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland — a short drive from New Gloucester in Cumberland County — so we respond quickly and know the homes, the weather, and the codes in your area.
Aces Highlands installs and replaces electrical outlets and switches throughout your home -- from adding GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms to installing smart switches and USB charging outlets.
Modern homes need more outlets than ever. We install additional outlets where you need them, upgrade existing outlets to GFCI or AFCI protection where code requires, and add USB charging outlets for convenience. If your home needs additional circuits to support new outlets, we also provide wiring and circuit installation services.
We install dimmer switches, three-way switches, timer switches, and smart switches compatible with popular home automation systems. Every installation is done cleanly with proper wire connections and secure mounting.
If your outlets are old, loose, or showing signs of damage like scorch marks or a burning smell, replacement is a safety priority. We diagnose the issue, replace the outlet or switch, and check the circuit to make sure everything is safe. Pair new switches with updated lighting fixtures for a complete room upgrade.

New Gloucester Homes and What They Need
New Gloucester has about 2,300 homes spread across 47 square miles, and the stock spans more than two centuries. Census estimates put the median year built at 1987, yet roughly one in nine homes predates 1940, many of them in the historic village along the old county road, in Upper Gloucester and around the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake. Most of the rest are single-family houses from the 1970s onward on rural frontage lots, and about 8 percent are manufactured homes, a larger share than in neighbouring Gray. Old farmhouses with ells and attached barns tend to carry plumbing and wiring from several eras, added room by room over the decades, so an older house can hide undersized circuits or early wiring behind later updates. A wiring assessment and rewire before adding heat pumps, an electric range or an EV charger avoids surprises.
Power, Storms and Wiring in New Gloucester
New Gloucester gets its electricity from Central Maine Power over long runs of line through woods and farmland, from Pineland to Sabbathday Lake, and damage on roads like these can take longer to reach. The 1998 ice storm hit the Lewiston-Auburn area just over the town line especially hard, and CMP named Cumberland County among the hardest hit in the October 2017 windstorm, its largest outage event on record. Because almost every home here pumps its own water and most burn oil in equipment that needs electricity to run, an outage stops water and heat at the same moment. A generator sized for the well pump and boiler is the usual answer. Census commute data show about half of New Gloucester workers travel 30 minutes or more each way, via I-95 or Route 26, so home EV charging is worth planning into any panel work.

Getting to Know New Gloucester
New Gloucester is home to Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, established in 1783 — the last active Shaker community in the world. Its 1794 meetinghouse still stands, the village is a National Historic Landmark, and a small number of practicing Shakers continue the tradition there today.
That deep history means New Gloucester has some genuinely old homes alongside rural properties running on oil and propane — exactly the kind of housing where a carefully planned heat pump conversion or boiler upgrade pays off, and where we do a lot of our work.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
Aces Highlands is a locally owned Portland, Maine company serving New Gloucester — not a national franchise. Nobody on our crew works on commission, so there is no incentive to sell you more than the job needs. Getting invited back is the only metric that matters here.

Outlets, Switches & Nuisance Tripping: A Homeowner's Guide
Two outlet questions come up more than any others on our service calls: "why does this keep tripping," and "do I need one of the buttons-in-the-middle outlets here." Both have real code-driven answers, not just personal preference.

Codes & Permits for Outlet & Switch Installation in New Gloucester
Electrical work in New Gloucester is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. The town's code enforcement page offers a downloadable electrical permit application but does not name a Local Electrical Inspector; absent one, electrical work is understood to fall to the State Electrical Inspector under Maine's Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (OPOR) / Electricians' Examining Board. New Gloucester is home to Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, the last active Shaker village in the U.S. (founded 1783, formally organized 1794).
- NFPA describes a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) as a device designed to protect people from a hazardous ground fault by shutting off electricity before a serious shock occurs, and an AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) as a device that shuts off electricity when it senses dangerous arcing conditions that can lead to an electrical fire. NFPA recommends testing both AFCIs and GFCIs once a month after installation. nfpa.org
- NFPA describes a tamper-resistant receptacle as one with a built-in shutter mechanism that keeps foreign objects from being inserted into the slots, and notes it is recommended for a home regardless of whether children live there. nfpa.org
- Replacing an existing switch, socket, or outlet is 'minor repair work' exempt from the state electrical permit; adding new outlet or switch circuits is not minor repair and needs a permit. maine.gov
- The Electricians' Examining Board operates within Maine's Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (Department of Professional and Financial Regulation); it is the state body that adopts the NEC edition, licenses electricians, and issues the statewide electrical permit. maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles Outlet & Switch Installation in New Gloucester
- A like-for-like outlet or switch swap needs no state permit; adding a new circuit for one does, and that's the part we file for.
- Maine's 2026 electrical rules extend GFCI protection to kitchen counters, outdoor receptacles, garages at or below grade and accessory buildings — we bring any outlet we touch in those areas up to that standard.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

Where to begin? These guys hooked up a sauna for me and did an amazing job, it was not a small job. Projects big or small, these guys are my go to. Responsive, reasonably priced, and professional. In a world where it is tough to get good service, I'm thrilled to have these guys in my phone.

This team was called in by my property management company for where I rent. Elijah and his team were professional, clear speaking. Good communicators gave me the real deal. Didn't give any runaround. I trust them and want to use them for my own projects.

Outlet & Switch Installation FAQs
Why is my outlet warm or buzzing?
Warmth, buzzing, or sparking usually means a loose or deteriorated connection inside the outlet — a fire risk that gets worse with use. Stop using the outlet and have it replaced promptly. It is typically a quick, inexpensive repair.
Can two-prong outlets be upgraded to three-prong?
Yes. If a ground path exists in the box, a straightforward swap works. If the circuit is ungrounded, code allows GFCI outlets labeled "No Equipment Ground" as a safe replacement, or we can run a properly grounded circuit. We check the wiring first and give you both prices where both apply.
Where do I need GFCI outlets in my house?
Modern code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, garages, unfinished basements, and outdoors — essentially anywhere near water or ground contact. Older homes are grandfathered, but adding GFCIs in those locations is a low-cost safety upgrade we strongly recommend.
How much does it cost to add or replace an outlet?
Replacing an existing outlet or switch is typically a modest service call; adding a brand-new outlet where none exists costs more because it involves running cable, nationally often $150-$350 per location depending on access. We quote before we work, and the quote is the price.
Can you install smart switches and dimmers I bought myself?
Yes. We install customer-supplied smart switches, dimmers, and USB outlets all the time — and we will flag compatibility issues (like dimmers that need a neutral wire your box may not have) before anything goes in the wall.
