Wiring & Rewiring for Poland Homeowners

Aces Highlands handles wiring & rewiring for homeowners throughout Poland. We work out of 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland, a short drive into Androscoggin County, so response times stay quick and every job benefits from knowing the local housing stock and code requirements.
Whether you need a single new circuit or a complete rewire of an older home, Aces Highlands handles residential wiring with precision and code compliance.
Older homes in the Portland area may still have knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring that presents safety risks and insurance issues. We replace outdated wiring with modern copper wiring, properly routed and protected in every wall and ceiling cavity. A rewire often pairs with a panel upgrade for a fully modernized electrical system.
For renovations and additions, we run new circuits, install junction boxes, and ensure proper wire sizing for the intended load. We also handle plumbing and HVAC work for remodel projects, keeping everything under one roof.
Every wiring job includes proper circuit labeling, secure connections, and thorough testing. We pull permits when required and schedule inspections to ensure full code compliance.
Why Poland Calls Aces Highlands
- A Androscoggin County crew that already knows Poland's streets and housing stock
- We tell you what is actually wrong and what it costs, plainly, every time
- A short wait for a truck, not a long one — most jobs move fast
- Properly licensed and covered by insurance; Google reviewers back up the work
Poland Homes and What They Need
Poland's median home was built in 1988, among the newest housing stock Aces serves, with only about 10 percent of units predating 1940 and 16 percent predating 1960 -- a profile that fits a lake-country and commuter town more than an old mill center. That newer housing stock still runs a full range of heat pump and central-air equipment worth keeping serviced.
Power, Storms and Wiring in Poland
Central Maine Power serves Poland's part of Androscoggin County. Because every home here is on a private well, losing power also means losing water pressure, which is exactly the kind of gap a standby generator is built to cover.

Getting to Know Poland
Poland is where the Poland Spring bottled-water brand and the old Poland Spring House resort got their start, though the bottling company today is a private business with no connection to the town's own municipal water supply, since there isn't one. The town is also home to Range Ponds State Park, tucked among rolling hills and a cluster of lakes that define much of Poland's character.
Poland has no townwide public water or sewer system at all -- most of the town relies on private wells and septic, and roughly 80 to 90 percent of its soils are rated suitable for on-site septic systems. As part of the Lewiston-Auburn metro area, Poland has also grown steadily as a lake-country and commuter town rather than around an old mill village.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
Aces Highlands answers to Poland homeowners directly, not a franchise office somewhere else in the country. Technicians are not on commission, so the recommendation you get is the one your house actually needs. Earning the next call, not hitting a sales target, is the entire business plan.
How Your Electrical Panel Works
- Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
- Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
- Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
- Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
- Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits

Old Wiring, Explained: Knob-and-Tube and Aluminum Branch Circuits
Southern Maine has a lot of housing stock old enough to have gone through several wiring eras, and two of them come up constantly on inspection reports: knob-and-tube and aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Neither one means your house is unsafe today, but both mean something specific, and homeowners deserve the real explanation instead of a scare pitch.

Codes & Permits for Wiring & Rewiring in Poland
Electrical work in Poland is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. Poland's Code Enforcement & Planning and Development office issues electrical permits at the Town Office; per the town's own FAQ, permits can be obtained in person (Mon-Thu, 9am-4pm) or via an online Electrical Permit Application e-mailed to the administrative assistant, with the permit issued only after payment is received. This makes the office Poland's Local Electrical Inspector (LEI) under Maine's electrician licensing law (32 M.R.S. ch. 17); no individual inspector was named. The town includes Range Ponds State Park amid rolling hills and numerous lakes, and is part of the Lewiston-Auburn metropolitan area.
- CPSC recognizes three permanent repair methods for aluminum branch-circuit wiring: (1) complete rewiring with copper, (2) the COPALUM crimp connection system, and (3) an approved 'alternative repair method' using a listed connector such as an AlumiConn connector to pigtail a short length of copper wire onto the existing aluminum conductor. CPSC does not list simply swapping in CO/ALR-rated devices as one of its three approved permanent repairs, and does not endorse do-it-yourself repair. cpsc.gov
- Any work extending, altering, or replacing existing wiring — including older knob-and-tube or aluminum branch-circuit wiring found in Maine's older housing stock — must be performed by a Maine-licensed electrician and brought up to the currently adopted 2026 NEC for the portion of the system being worked on. maine.gov
- Rewiring beyond the state's 'minor repair work' exemption (which covers only replacing existing switches, sockets, lamps, fuses, and repairing entrance-service equipment) requires a standard electrical permit. maine.gov
- Maine's Electricians' Examining Board has adopted the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), effective for all electrical installations commencing on or after July 1, 2026, subject to Maine's own amendments and exclusions set out in Chapter 120 (Electrical Installation Standards). The prior standard was the 2023 NEC, effective July 1, 2024. maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles Wiring & Rewiring in Poland
- With 10% of housing in Poland built before 1940, we regularly find knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring on a rewiring job; the section we touch gets rebuilt to today's code, full stop.
- Maine only exempts like-for-like switch/outlet swaps from the permit requirement — any circuit extension or addition on a rewiring job is permitted work in our hands.
- Every circuit we touch gets tested and labeled, and any new run is built to the 2026 NEC — the edition Maine requires for work starting July 1, 2026 on.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

I've had three HVAC issues over the past two years. Each time I call, Elija or the office picks up the phone, and my problem is fixed in 24 hrs. Their solutions always feel correct and honest. I cannot recommend them more.

Wiring & Rewiring FAQs
Will my insurance company cover a home with knob-and-tube wiring?
Increasingly, no. Many insurers in Maine decline coverage or charge steep premiums for homes with active knob-and-tube, and some require replacement before closing on a sale. Rewiring resolves the insurance problem and removes a genuine fire risk at the same time.
How much does it cost to rewire a house?
Nationally, whole-home rewiring typically runs $4-$10+ per square foot depending on access, home age, and finish level — a partial rewire of only the original circuits costs far less. After walking your home, we quote a firm written price so there are no surprises.
Do you have to open up all my walls to rewire?
No. We fish new wiring through existing cavities from basements, attics, and small access openings. Some targeted drywall openings are usually necessary, but they are modest and easy to patch — nothing like the gut job people imagine.
How long does a whole-home rewire take?
Most single-family rewires take several days to a week depending on size and access. We stage the work so you keep power in the rooms you are living in, and we walk you through the schedule before we start.
Can I just add GFCI outlets instead of rewiring?
Sometimes. GFCI protection can add shock protection to ungrounded circuits and is a legitimate, code-recognized improvement. But it does not fix deteriorated insulation or overloaded conductors. We will tell you honestly which situation you have — protection upgrade or genuine rewire.
