Sewer Line Repair & Replacement for Turner Homeowners

When Turner homeowners need sewer line repair & replacement, Aces Highlands is the local team to call. We are based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland — a short drive from Turner in Androscoggin County — so we respond quickly and know the homes, the weather, and the codes in your area.
Sewage backing up through a basement floor drain usually means the main line between your house and the street has failed. Aces Highlands diagnoses with a camera, repairs what is broken, and replaces only when replacement is the honest answer.
The sewer lateral carries everything from your house to the city main or septic tank. In Portland, South Portland, and Westbrook, many laterals are original clay or cast iron from the early 1900s and are nearing end of life.
Tree roots find the joints in clay pipe, cast iron rusts until the bottom of the pipe is gone, and frost heave shifts sections out of line. The result: a line that clogs every few months until it collapses.
We start every sewer call with a camera, not a shovel. Seeing the break, its depth, and distance from the house tells us whether a cleaning, a spot repair, or full replacement is right. We show you the footage.
Sewer work in Portland involves plumbing permits, a licensed plumber for the connection, and a street-opening permit near the main. We handle paperwork, coordinate with the city, and restore your lawn or driveway. Active backups are an emergency call.

Turner Homes and What They Need
Turner's median home was built in 1980, with about 16 percent of housing predating 1940 and 21 percent predating 1960 -- a moderate share of older farmhouses and village housing mixed with later rural infill. Older farmhouses in particular often need a fresh look at wiring that was added piecemeal over the decades.
Water Supply and Drains in Turner
Turner has no public water district and no public sewer system; homes rely on private wells and septic, with septic permits filed on the state's own HHE-200 and HHE-211 forms through the town's Code Enforcement Officer. On a rural well-and-septic property, leak repair often starts with checking the well's pressure tank rather than assuming municipal water pressure.

Getting to Know Turner
Turner was incorporated back in 1786, taking its current name from the town's first minister, Rev. Charles Turner, in place of the original 1768 land-grant name 'Sylvester-Canada.' It grew up as a farming community known for corn and apples, helped along by water-power sites on the Nezinscot River.
The town today is made up of three villages -- Turner, Turner Center, and North Turner -- and sits within the Lewiston-Auburn metro area even though it has kept its rural, agricultural character. That mix of old farmhouses and newer rural infill is part of what makes Turner's housing stock so varied.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
We are an independent, Portland-based company, not a franchise chain routing your Turner job to a call center. Technicians are not on commission, so the recommendation you get is the one your house actually needs. That is how we keep customers calling back, one honest job at a time.
How Your Drain-Waste-Vent System Works
- Fixture drains — sinks, tubs, and toilets
- Main stack — collects branch lines and vents through the roof
- Vent — keeps trap seals from siphoning dry
- Cleanout — access point for clearing clogs
- Building sewer — carries wastewater to the street main

Sewer Line Repair: Camera Inspections, Roots & Trenchless Options
A failing sewer line is one of the more expensive plumbing problems a homeowner can face, which is exactly why diagnosing it correctly before digging matters as much as the repair itself.

Codes & Permits for Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Turner
In Turner, plumbing permits come from the Local Plumbing Inspector at the Turner Code Enforcement Office (Turner Town Office, Turner, ME 04282, (207) 225-3414). With 5,817 residents, Turner is required to enforce the Maine Uniform Building and Energy Code (MUBEC). Turner was incorporated in 1786, renamed from the original 1768 grant 'Sylvester-Canada' in honor of its first minister, Rev. Charles Turner.
- A Maine-licensed Site Evaluator qualifies through an exam covering the state's plumbing/SSWD rules and soils, and performs the site work (digging test pits, reading soil texture and depth to bedrock) that a septic permit depends on. maine.gov
- The Local Plumbing Inspector who issues internal plumbing permits also enforces the state's Subsurface Wastewater Disposal rules for septic systems in their municipality. mainelegislature.org
- Where a municipal ordinance requires it, the owner of a building that abuts a street containing a sewer must connect that building to the sewer and stop using any other wastewater disposal method. mainelegislature.org
- Every Maine municipality must annually appoint at least one Local Plumbing Inspector (LPI), who does not have to live in that town, to issue plumbing permits and enforce the state's plumbing rules and Subsurface Wastewater Disposal (septic) rules locally. mainelegislature.org
How Aces Highlands Handles Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Turner
- No public sewer system runs Turner's public sewer, treating it at individual subsurface wastewater (septic) systems, permitted via the state's HHE-200 (Subsurface Wastewater Disposal) and HHE-211 (Internal Plumbing) forms. The lateral from your foundation to the main is the owner's line, so we scope it before recommending any digging.
- 21% of Turner's homes went up before 1960 — the cast-iron and clay-lateral era, and exactly the kind of line that cracks and lets roots in.
- A failed septic system requires an HHE-200 design from a licensed Site Evaluator plus a Local Plumbing Inspector permit — we line up both before any excavator shows up.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

I've had an excellent experience working with them for both electrical and HVAC work as I remodel my 1785 home. I highly recommend them.
Sewer Line Repair & Replacement FAQs
Who is responsible for the sewer line — me or the city?
In Portland and most Southern Maine towns, the homeowner owns and maintains the lateral from the house all the way to the connection at the city main, including the section under the sidewalk and street. The city is responsible for the main itself. Check your town's sewer ordinance for the exact boundary; we can help you read it.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer line replacement?
Usually not under a standard policy. Some insurers offer a service-line endorsement for a small annual premium that covers the lateral, and some cover the resulting water damage but not the pipe. Call your agent before the work starts, and ask us for the camera footage — insurers often want it.
How long does a sewer line replacement take?
Most full replacements take one to three days from the first shovel to backfill, plus a day or two beforehand for Dig Safe locates and permits. Spot repairs are often finished in a single day. You will be without drains for part of that time; we tell you exactly when before we start.
Do I need a permit to replace a sewer line in Maine?
Yes. Sewer lateral work requires a plumbing permit and an inspection before backfill, and work in a city street or sidewalk needs a street-opening permit. The connection itself must be made by a licensed Maine plumber. We pull every permit and schedule the inspections.
Can tree roots really break a sewer pipe?
Yes. Roots enter at the joints of clay pipe seeking water, then grow until they crack the pipe or fill it completely. Cutting the roots restores flow for a season or two; the permanent fix is replacing the joint they enter through or the whole run. Maples and willows near the pipe path are the usual culprits.
Is trenchless sewer repair available in Portland?
It depends on the pipe. Cured-in-place lining needs a host pipe that still holds its shape; pipe bursting needs room to pull a new pipe through and access pits at each end. Collapsed sections, bellies, and multiple bends often rule them out. The camera inspection tells us, and we quote both ways when both are possible.
