Wiring & Rewiring for Falmouth Homeowners

When Falmouth homeowners need wiring & rewiring, Aces Highlands is the local team to call. We are based at 508 Riverside St Unit 1 in Portland — a short drive from Falmouth in Cumberland County — so we respond quickly and know the homes, the weather, and the codes in your area.
Whether you need a single new circuit or a complete rewire of an older home, Aces Highlands handles residential wiring with precision and code compliance.
Older homes in the Portland area may still have knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring that presents safety risks and insurance issues. We replace outdated wiring with modern copper wiring, properly routed and protected in every wall and ceiling cavity. A rewire often pairs with a panel upgrade for a fully modernized electrical system.
For renovations and additions, we run new circuits, install junction boxes, and ensure proper wire sizing for the intended load. We also handle plumbing and HVAC work for remodel projects, keeping everything under one roof.
Every wiring job includes proper circuit labeling, secure connections, and thorough testing. We pull permits when required and schedule inspections to ensure full code compliance.
Why Falmouth Calls Aces Highlands
- Local team minutes from Falmouth, serving all of Cumberland County
- Diagnostics come first, upsells do not — the invoice matches the quote
- Booking stays quick because we do not overbook the schedule
- Fully licensed, fully insured — neighbors in Falmouth leave us reviews on Google
Falmouth Homes and What They Need
Falmouth's housing is younger than most of Greater Portland. Census estimates put the median home here at 1986, and roughly 14 percent of homes have been built since 2010, many of them in newer subdivisions. The older layer is still real: about 14 percent of homes predate 1940 and about four in ten predate 1980, from Falmouth Foreside along Route 88 to West Falmouth Corner and Highland Lake. Around 80 percent of homes are single-family detached houses, and most are owner-occupied. In practice that means two very different kinds of job in one town: a newer colonial with PEX, a mechanical room and room for ductwork, and a Foreside house with copper or galvanized supply lines, tired shutoff valves and pinhole leaks that need tracing behind finished walls.
Power, Storms and Wiring in Falmouth
Central Maine Power serves Falmouth, and the town's tree-lined roads have taken real hits. In the January 1998 ice storm, Falmouth was among the Greater Portland towns that bore the brunt of the damage, and the December 2023 wind and rain storm left more than 56,000 Cumberland County customers without power at its height. Census estimates show about a third of Falmouth workers now work from home, which turns a two-day outage into lost work as well as a cold house, and makes a transfer switch or standby generator worth pricing before the next storm. The other trend is charging: short commutes into Portland suit electric vehicles, and many of the town's 1980s and 1990s houses have 100 or 150 amp panels already crowded with circuits. A load calculation shows whether a Level 2 EV charger in the garage fits on the existing service or needs an upgrade first.

Getting to Know Falmouth
The original town of Falmouth once encompassed what are now Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, and Cape Elizabeth — those communities were all carved out of it over time. Just offshore, Mackworth Island was Governor Percival Baxter's family retreat before he deeded it to the State of Maine in 1943; today it is famous for the "fairy houses" visitors build in its woods and for Baxter's stone-walled memorial to his Irish Setters.
Modern Falmouth is known for well-kept homes with high-end finishes — the kind of properties where clean line-set routing, tidy penetrations, and spotless job sites matter. That is how we work.
Local & Independent — Not a Franchise
Aces Highlands answers to Falmouth homeowners directly, not a franchise office somewhere else in the country. Our techs are paid to do the job right, not to upsell — no commission structure pushes them toward extra work. We show up, fix the actual problem, and let the work speak for itself.
How Your Electrical Panel Works
- Meter — measures the power the utility delivers
- Main breaker — the single shutoff for the whole panel
- Branch breakers — one per circuit, trip on overload or a fault
- Neutral / ground bus — the common return and safety path
- Panel capacity — how much headroom is left for new circuits

Old Wiring, Explained: Knob-and-Tube and Aluminum Branch Circuits
Southern Maine has a lot of housing stock old enough to have gone through several wiring eras, and two of them come up constantly on inspection reports: knob-and-tube and aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Neither one means your house is unsafe today, but both mean something specific, and homeowners deserve the real explanation instead of a scare pitch.

Codes & Permits for Wiring & Rewiring in Falmouth
Electrical work in Falmouth is licensed and permitted under Maine's Electricians' Examining Board, which adopted the 2026 National Electrical Code effective July 1, 2026. Confirmed live on the Code Enforcement Division page: the division is responsible for "Issuing all permits associated with construction projects (e.g., building, plumbing, heating, and electrical)" and requires a current Maine electrician's license before work is inspected. The division functions as Falmouth's Local Electrical Inspector under Maine's electrician licensing law (32 M.R.S. ch. 17); no individual inspector was named on the page. Falmouth is served by Portland Water District for water but has its own municipal wastewater utility, and by Summit Natural Gas of Maine (not Unitil) for piped natural gas.
- CPSC recognizes three permanent repair methods for aluminum branch-circuit wiring: (1) complete rewiring with copper, (2) the COPALUM crimp connection system, and (3) an approved 'alternative repair method' using a listed connector such as an AlumiConn connector to pigtail a short length of copper wire onto the existing aluminum conductor. CPSC does not list simply swapping in CO/ALR-rated devices as one of its three approved permanent repairs, and does not endorse do-it-yourself repair. cpsc.gov
- Any work extending, altering, or replacing existing wiring — including older knob-and-tube or aluminum branch-circuit wiring found in Maine's older housing stock — must be performed by a Maine-licensed electrician and brought up to the currently adopted 2026 NEC for the portion of the system being worked on. maine.gov
- Rewiring beyond the state's 'minor repair work' exemption (which covers only replacing existing switches, sockets, lamps, fuses, and repairing entrance-service equipment) requires a standard electrical permit. maine.gov
- State law: 'No electrical equipment may be installed or altered unless the person making the installation first obtains a permit from the Electricians' Examining Board, or towns/cities that have their own electrical inspector.' Exceptions to the state permit include: single-family dwellings (certification is needed on single-family dwellings, or a licensed Master electrician may verify the work); utility-company work on its own equipment; and 'minor repair work, including the replacement of lamps, fuses, lighting fixtures, switches and sockets, the installation and repair of outlets, radio and other low voltage equipment and the repair of entrance service equipment.' maine.gov
How Aces Highlands Handles Wiring & Rewiring in Falmouth
- With 14% of housing in Falmouth built before 1940, we regularly find knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring on a rewiring job; the section we touch gets rebuilt to today's code, full stop.
- Maine only exempts like-for-like switch/outlet swaps from the permit requirement — any circuit extension or addition on a rewiring job is permitted work in our hands.
- We label circuits as we go and bring anything new up to the 2026 National Electrical Code, Maine's current standard.

I can not recommend Sam and his team enough!! In a world of slow response times and cut corners they went above and beyond in every area, installing a new electrical panel for me. Their attention to detail and love of their craft truly sets them apart from the rest!

We have called Samuel for our electrical needs over the last few years and have always been impressed with professional and courteous attitude — installing extra outlets, installing new lights and ceiling fans, our whole house generator, charger for the electric car, even the hot tub!!! His price was fair, and never disappointed when work was completed.

We highly recommend Highlands Heating & AC. They are extremely responsive, knowledgeable and do great work. Our boiler stopped working and Elijah was quick to respond after hours on a Friday. He installed a new boiler and heat pump hot water heater.

He was very friendly. He gave me an honest explanation on why I shouldn't recharge my A/C unit and what he suggested made much more sense. He really took care of everything. He is very professional, always called me with updates. 5 stars is not enough — I give this company 10 stars.
Wiring & Rewiring FAQs
Will my insurance company cover a home with knob-and-tube wiring?
Increasingly, no. Many insurers in Maine decline coverage or charge steep premiums for homes with active knob-and-tube, and some require replacement before closing on a sale. Rewiring resolves the insurance problem and removes a genuine fire risk at the same time.
How much does it cost to rewire a house?
Nationally, whole-home rewiring typically runs $4-$10+ per square foot depending on access, home age, and finish level — a partial rewire of only the original circuits costs far less. After walking your home, we quote a firm written price so there are no surprises.
Do you have to open up all my walls to rewire?
No. We fish new wiring through existing cavities from basements, attics, and small access openings. Some targeted drywall openings are usually necessary, but they are modest and easy to patch — nothing like the gut job people imagine.
How long does a whole-home rewire take?
Most single-family rewires take several days to a week depending on size and access. We stage the work so you keep power in the rooms you are living in, and we walk you through the schedule before we start.
Can I just add GFCI outlets instead of rewiring?
Sometimes. GFCI protection can add shock protection to ungrounded circuits and is a legitimate, code-recognized improvement. But it does not fix deteriorated insulation or overloaded conductors. We will tell you honestly which situation you have — protection upgrade or genuine rewire.
